The faculty shall consist of teachers with the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, or Instructor, and any other designated by the President.

Augustana University invites applications for a part-time Instructor in the Genetic Counseling Department.

Work Schedule: The individual will teach 4 credits per year over a 12-month period. The work schedule may vary, based on student needs and availability, but, at a minimum, the individual must be available:

  • Tuesdays 2:00 PM-4:00 PM CT during the Fall and Spring semesters for guest lectures. It may be possible to provide a workshop versus several guest lectures.
  • At other times Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, throughout the year to meet with students one-on-one. Students are located in both Central and Pacific Time Zones, with the earliest meeting time available for San Diego students at 10:00 AM CT.
  • Approximately 4-5 hours each week, but workload may not be spread equally throughout each semester.

General Description/Purpose: The Statistics Content Expert will support Master of Science in Genetic Counseling students by: (1) guest lecturing/providing a workshop(s) each Fall and Spring, and (2) throughout all semesters, serving as a mentor for students throughout their research by providing one-on-one guidance and support through the data analysis process as well as serving on student research committees and/or assisting in finding appropriate individuals to serve on research committees.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate will hold a PhD or a master’s degree, with a significant statistical background, including quantitative and qualitative analysis skills, and mentoring/teaching experience.

Job Title: Chair/Faculty

Located on a beautiful campus in the heart of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Augustana University is home to a CCNE-accredited baccalaureate nursing program with over 300 nursing majors in traditional and accelerated degree options. Since 1940, the Department of Nursing has been a regional leader in preparing nurses, leaders, and administrators for hospitals and community health organizations. Sioux Falls (with a metro area of roughly 250,000) is a growing, vibrant, and increasingly diverse community that is home to several high-quality regional health care organizations who serve as partners to Augustana’s stellar programs.

Against this backdrop, Augustana University is seeking a visionary leader to serve in the role of Chair of the Department of Nursing beginning in January 2019.  The successful applicant will have an opportunity to lead a program of highly qualified and energized nursing faculty who have and will continue under new leadership to expand educational opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful applicant will have significant leadership experience in nursing education and/or healthcare settings; experience with program development that involves innovation and collaboration; effective communication, interpersonal, and mentoring skills; and an understanding of the opportunities and challenges affecting the discipline of nursing.

In keeping with CCNE standards, the applicant must be a registered nurse, hold a research doctorate degree in nursing, and be eligible for RN licensure in the state of South Dakota; further, the applicant must have experience in baccalaureate nursing education and be qualified academically and experientially to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes central to Augustana’s nursing programs.  Preference will be given to applicants with those with exceptional leadership experience in clinical health-care settings.

The Nursing Chair has leadership and administrative responsibility for the baccalaureate program including coordination and participation in activities related to curriculum development, faculty recruitment and mentoring, student recruitment and retention, and program evaluation. The Chair ensures that the program meets all applicable regulatory, governmental, and accreditation standards.  Building on the foundations established in the 2019 Horizons strategic plan and functioning as a vital component in an emerging and exciting 2030 Vision that will focus, in part, on continued enrollment growth, dynamic community engagement, and a vital blend of professional programs with strong liberal arts offerings in numerous majors, minors, and general education offerings, this individual will work closely with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the AVP for Graduate and Continuing Education as well as other senior leaders on and off campus to identify, develop, and implement new and innovative programs and certificates.

Job Title: Assistant or Associate Professor

Augustana University seeks to fill a 9-month full-time, tenure track position in the Business Administration Department at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Ideal candidates will hold a Ph.D. in business administration or related field. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to teaching, scholarly and professional activities, and a willingness to be active in service to the university and community

Primary responsibility is to teach courses for the business administration degree, which may include accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, management, marketing, or management information systems. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have significant full-time teaching experience. Significant practical professional experience in a discipline-related field is desirable.

Job Title: Assistant Professor

Department: Sociology

Augustana University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department, to begin Fall 2019.

Responsibilities:  The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong commitment to liberal arts education coupled with teaching ability in research methods and families.  While other areas of teaching and research are open, we are especially interested in candidates whose areas would support our departmental emphasis in “Family and Community Studies,” a track within our major serving students interested in human service careers.  Special interest in aging is welcomed, and candidates whose previous work demonstrates the integration of these areas will be given priority.  Teaching load will include one course per year in the University’s First Year Seminar program – a freshman course that connects creative expressions of the instructor’s areas of expertise with University curriculum that promotes writing, communication, critical thinking, and ethical reasoning. Opportunities also exist for partnerships with the Augustana Research Institute, a University initiative to support research in the local community. 

The typical teaching load is 3-1-3 with a research leave every third January. January terms may include catalog courses or specialized courses in the faculty member’s areas of scholarship or study abroad.

Qualifications:  Completed Ph.D. in sociology required. Evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly productivity expected.

Job Title: Assistant Professor of Government and International Affairs
Position Type: Full Time
Department: Government and International Affairs

Augustana University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Government and International Affairs beginning in Fall 2019.

Responsibilities: This is an international relations and comparative politics position.  The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment.  Courses to be taught depend primarily on departmental needs in both areas of international and comparative, with some flexibility for the candidate’s training and interests. 

The typical load for members of the department is three courses per semester plus a course in two out of every three January terms.

Qualifications: Completed Ph.D. required.  Evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly productivity is expected as is an ability to contribute courses to Augustana University’s Civitas honors program and/or First Year Seminar program.

Job Title: Assistant Professor of Biology
Position Type: Full Time
Department: Biology

Augustana University invites applications for a continuing-track Assistant Professor position in the Biology Department beginning September 2019. This is a half-teaching/half-lab coordinator position. Candidates are required have a Master’s degree in a biology, preferably in microbiology or a related field. Alternatively, licensed Medical Lab Scientists are also eligible to apply.  A Ph.D. is preferred, but not required.

Teaching Expectations: Courses will be assigned based on departmental needs from semester to semester, but will generally include laboratory sections in microbiology, cell biology, genetics, and/or introductory biology. Responsibilities will include coordinating courses with multiple lab sections taught by other faculty.  Student academic advising is also an expectation. Ultimately, we seek someone with a demonstrated dedication to undergraduate education, a willingness to be flexible, and a commitment to innovative and excellent teaching. Summer teaching opportunities are also available if desired. Research is not an expectation for the position.

Job Title: Assistant Professor of Mathematics
Position Type: Full Time
Department: Mathematics

Augustana University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Mathematics beginning August 2019. Applicants must hold a doctorate in mathematics at the time of appointment. Responsibilities include teaching a broad variety of undergraduate courses in mathematics, conducting an active research program, and participating in service to the university and the profession. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to a liberal arts education.

Teaching Expectations: Excellence in teaching is highly valued, and the use of innovative teaching practices and technology is encouraged.  Willingness to advise, develop, and work with undergraduate students is required.  The teaching load is 3-1-3, with 15-week semesters in fall and spring and a 3-week January term.

Research Expectations: Evidence of a commitment to and clearly developed plan for a research program and future professional development is required. Priority will be given to applicants with a plan for incorporating undergraduate students into their research program. The preferred candidate will direct individual students' work in undergraduate research and expository experiences.
