Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics

Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Physics

Augustana University (SD) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics to begin in the Fall of 2017. The position is a sabbatical replacement and expected to last two years.  We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in physics, a record of successful physics instruction at the TA level or beyond, and are comfortable with laboratory instructional equipment.  The position should be attractive to recent or imminent Ph.D. recipients who are considering a career at a liberal arts college or small university, or individuals with research experience looking to enhance their teaching credentials. The department considers the mentoring of new faculty to be an important part of visiting appointments.

Augustana has two 15 week semesters and a 3 week interim term in January.  During each of the regular semesters, the visiting faculty member will teach two courses and share responsibility for the advanced laboratory sequence.  During the interim term, the visiting faculty will be responsible for one course.  Specific courses to be taught by the applicant will be determined in consultation with the applicant.

The physics department at Augustana is growing, with a current enrollment of 48 majors.  Around half of the graduates will continue on to graduate or professional school, while most of the rest opt for a dual-degree engineering program.  The department is committed to applying research based techniques in teaching.   Most of our larger introductory courses use a mix of peer-instruction and other active-learning methods.  In our smaller upper-level courses, we engage students individually both inside and outside of class.

The department has a strong record of undergraduate research, and 95% of graduates within the last 10 years have participated in a research experience before they graduate.  Active areas of research in the department include particle physics, specifically the DarkSide dark mater experiment, high energy nuclear physics on the PHENIX collaboration, and atomic, molecular, and optical physics, through an ongoing collaboration with the J.R. Macdonald Laboratory at Kansas State University. More details about the department can be found at http://www.augie.edu/academics/physics. There will be some opportunity for visiting faculty to collaborate in these undergraduate research areas during the years, although this is not required for the position.  Sioux Falls, SD (metro area population of 230,000) is a growing diverse community with an emerging biomedical and renewable energy research sector.  The area provides abundant cultural and recreational opportunities and an exceptionally high quality of living.  Sioux Falls also boasts a healthy economy and relatively low unemployment rate.  A number of places have listed Sioux Falls as a great place to live: Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/places/sd/sioux-falls/) and Livabilty (http://livability.com/sd/sioux-falls) recently.
