Hundreds of Augustana students, alumni, faculty and staff came out to celebrate the official start of Augustana University Tuesday morning.

News of the name change broke more than a week earlier.

Augustana College is now Augustana University. The name change was made official during ceremonies yesterday at the Sioux Falls institution’s Kirkeby-Over Stadium. Augustana is a private, liberal arts college founded in 1860. It first opened in Sioux Falls as the Lutheran Normal School in 1889. It has around 1,800 full and part-time students. Augustana University President Rob Oliver joined Dakota Midday and discussed the name change.

Augustana Students Return for New Era

Augustana University is where freshman Emily Delzer will be for the next four years.

"I just had that feeling like this is my second home and I feel comfortable here and I want to go here," Delzer said.

It's an exciting time for the graduating class of 2019. Monday marks the beginning of the pursuit to accomplish their career goals.

The school formally introduced its new name on Tuesday. President Rob Oliver also announced plans to build a new 125,000-square-foot student activities center with an indoor track and a fitness center.
