The initial phase of fieldwork is conducting an on-the-ground pedestrian survey across all or portions of the area of potential effect (APE). Prior to fieldwork, ALAC staff will closely consult with the project sponsor and the SHPO to determine what level of survey coverage is required for the
undertaking. Variations in survey strategies may involve sampling low probability areas and subsurface shovel or auger testing in project areas with low surface visibility. Identified archeological sites are documented through photography, GIS/GPS mapping, and compilation of detailed notes. Select artifacts may be mapped and collected to facilitate determination of cultural affiliation and site function. Standing structures over 50 years old that may be impacted by the undertaking are typically photographed and documented at the reconnaissance level.
