What Can I Do With a Biochemistry Major?
Biochemistry students will achieve a broad background in the natural sciences that prepares them for a variety of post-graduation options, including research positions, graduate studies, professional health disciplines, biotechnology, chemical industry, and other professions.
Augustana’s biochemistry major fulfills the guidelines set forth by the American Chemical Society (ACS) for biochemistry, a feature that enhances the value of the major.
The city of Sioux Falls has five hospitals and a University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine campus, which allows students to work in clinical and research labs, shadow doctors, and gain patient care experience.
Students often earn credit while shadowing physicians, pharmacists, dentists or other health professionals in both the clinical and hospital setting. Internships in Forensic Chemistry at the Washington State Crime Lab (Spokane, WA) and alternative fuels at POET Research are other popular options. Other opportunities are available through an extended alumni network.
Scientists at heart, biochemistry students prepare themselves for careers in areas such as teaching, research, industry, medicine, dentistry, medical technology, physical therapy, and environmental biology.
Biochemists are employed in plastic, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and other chemical industries in testing, forensic, and quality control labs and for federal agencies like the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency as well as state crime labs. And don’t forget teaching!
A strong liberal arts background combined with our serious, rigorous curriculum ensures the breadth and depth of preparation you need for any career — or continued study at some of the country’s top graduate schools.
