Course Descriptions and Requirements
The courses that support the business administration and accounting majors represent the functional areas of business: accounting, finance, management, marketing, and law. Students are also afforded the opportunity to study inferential statistics, macroeconomics, and microeconomics. These "traditional" courses are taught with a forward-looking perspective: technology is integrated where appropriate and cutting-edge topics are addressed in the upper-division courses. Students who study in the business administration department learn principles and underlying theories then apply those principles to new and extended areas of the discipline.
The accounting major is designed to prepare students for career opportunities in private business accounting. The required business courses strengthen graduates’ abilities to serve organizations in the broader capacity expected of a private accountant. The liberal arts curriculum make the Augustana accounting major unique. Our small class sizes give students the opportunity to interact with our faculty on a daily basis, maximizing their individual learning experiences. Students interested in preparing to take the CPA examination should consider completing our master of professional accountancy (MPA) program. This program meets the requirements of the State Boards of Accountancy, including South Dakota, which have elected the 150-hour educational requirement to sit for the CPA exam.
The business administration major offers a fundamental understanding in the areas of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and statistics. An individual becomes familiar with the languages of the business environment, and develops an ability to analyze and solve problems faced by the business administrator.

Entrepreneurship is inherently an interdisciplinary emphasis, since students will likely have a passion for opportunities in many different areas of expertise such as performing arts, science, literature, computer science, etc. A liberal arts education is essential to develop perspectives known to be important for critical thinking and other skills needed by entrepreneurs. Courses in psychology, sociology, fine arts, science and humanities complement the curriculum students will study in their major in the classroom and experiential activities.

The effective investment and management of capital is crucial for the survival and growth of all organizations. As a discipline, finance is equally important to for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. You will learn to maximize value while minimizing risk; your analytical skills will be strengthened, all while you build a strong academic background in finance within the context of a liberal arts environment.

In your focused study of management, you will consider the principles of organization, the design of hierarchy, and the allocation of resources. The courses of the management emphasis are designed to build strong communication skills, develop critical thinking, and identify personal traits of leadership. Best practices of management across diverse business environments are considered so that the skills you develop can be applied to a variety of subdisciplines within the broad arena of management.

Management Information Systems (MIS) focuses on the design and implementation of computer systems which support the goals and objectives of an organization. When paired with your major in business administration, your MIS emphasis will help you develop skills for the analysis, design, implementation, and management of complex information systems in a variety of organizational structures.

Marketing is a broad and varied discipline that involves a variety of activities including, but not limited to, marketing research, promotion, pricing, product/service management, channel management, and selling. The study of this multi-faceted business function in a liberal arts setting makes perfect sense. Your study of marketing will focus on the skills most common to marketing managers: the understanding of market research and consumer behavior, the development of market strategies that impact promotion and sales, and the application of marketing in special target areas such as healthcare, sports, and direct marketing, and advertising.
