Business Experience: Prior to joining the faculty at  Augustana University, Professor Hybertson worked at a public accounting firm, primarily in the area of taxation.  During this time, sheworked with individual, trust, corporate, partnership, and gift tax returns.  In addition to taxation she also worked with retirement plan and foundation audits.  These varied jobs allowed her toexperience both sides of public accounting. Professor Hybertson continues to practice accounting. The focus of her consulting is small businesses and small not for profits. She assiststhem with the development of accounting systems, payroll taxation, sales and contractor’s excise taxes, financial statement analysis, and audit preparation.

Interests: Professor Hybertson’s research interests include business dynamics in small communities, experiential learning as it pertains to accounting, and the impact of advanced degrees on an accounting career. In addition to research she is involved in many volunteeractivities. She serves on seven community boards with varied focuses. Professor Hybertson isthe site coordinator for the Sioux Falls Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This program provides free tax preparation for low income and elderly individuals. She encourages her students to get involved with this program in order to gain experience and give back their community. Memorable classroom moment: The most memorable moments come when I sees students truly understand accounting and apply it. I had one student who had taken three classes with me and then joined me in volunteering for the VITA program. She was not a ‘top of the class’student, so I kept a close eye on her at the site, in case she needed assistance. When she sat down with her first client I was amazed! She was able to answer all of his questions and explain the tax law in a way he could understand. In those ten minutes I saw that she truly understood taxation and could apply it. When she came to me for a reference letter for her first position I was able to give her a phenomenal reference because I saw something her grades did not thoroughly reflect, a deep understanding of the complexities of tax law and the ability to bring itto a level that everyone could understand.

Advice for business students: Be open to opportunities when they arise, whether it be a newbusiness class or a change of career path.  You never know where these opportunities may lead you. It may be the road you were meant to follow.
