Highlights, Special Features and Opportunities
Education majors can get involved in student clubs and organizations, enrichment programs and work study opportunities.
SCEC (Student Council for Exceptional Children)
"Opportunities like SCEC and going to the National CEC convention was a wonderful opportunity. I had professional development in a pre-professional setting."
— Elayna DeHaan, Class of 2012, Elementary Special Education Teacher
Come join SCEC! Special Education majors are welcome and needed. This student-run organization promotes professional development of its members in serving children, youth, and adults with exceptionalities. Meet new people, connect for fun and friendship, and be part of a group working for a worthy cause.
AUEA (Augustana University Education Association)
Every education major is welcome — join AUEA! This organization prides itself on community service, professional development and social activities. Each year members participate in a variety of activities including: marching in the Viking Days homecoming parade, hosting a Student Teacher Panel, partnering with classrooms throughout the area to work with children, assisting the local SDEA/NEA organization with information distribution, staying informed on trends in national, state and local educational issues, attending the state and national conference with other college students from around the country, and sponsoring an annual book fair for the entire Augustana campus.
Deaf Awareness Organization
The Augustana University Deaf Awareness organization welcomes any Augustana University student who has an interest in promoting the Deaf Community and American Sign Language (ASL). This organization works to create an awareness about Deaf Culture and ASL through a variety of activities. They sign songs at various places during the Christmas season. They decorate a float for the homecoming parade and sign a song while sitting on the float during the parade. In the spring they host a performance called "Burst of Sign," which includes a variety of signed songs, skits, ABC stories, and signed children's stories.
Language Enrichment Camp
The Summer Enrichment Program is designed to provide students an opportunity to socialize with other Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. The four weeks of thematic based units provided a language rich environment in which students use expressive and receptive skills to communicate with hearing and Deaf staff members. Students are encouraged to utilize sign language during peer to peer interactions. Deaf role models on staff as well as guest readers and volunteers are used to promote and teach Deaf culture. For some students this is their only opportunity to interact with other students with a hearing loss.
ASL (American Sign Language) Lab
"I chose Augie because my high school ASL teacher, who is Deaf, recommended I go there. Augustana University is the best choice for Sign Language Interpreting because you learn and perfect the skills needed to interpret and you will have confidence in those skills."
— Mychal Hadrich, Class of 2012
