Hands-On Learning

A number of exciting internships are available to Government and International Affairs majors, including internships through the Washington Semester Program, as well as many state and local opportunities. Augustana has strong, long-standing relationships with the offices of both South Dakota U.S. senators and its U.S. representative, as well as with leading law firms in the city of Sioux Falls. Students have the opportunity to work on issues important to them and to develop and cultivate contacts that often turn into full-time jobs upon graduation. Internships provide employers with excellent opportunities to assess the attitude, skills, and quality of student interns.

Internships through the Lutheran College Washington Semester meet a student’s academic and personal interests and could be with a member of the U.S. Congress, a government agency, a non-profit organization, a lobbying firm, a public interest group, the Washington office of a religious denomination, museum, or theatre.

U.S. Senator John Thune Visits Augustana Government Class

In Spring 2013, students in Dr. Emily Wanless' GOVT 210 course, "Congress," had a special guest in class: U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the No. 3 republican in the Senate. Thune talked with students about the budgetary process and outlined his ideas on how to drive a balanced budget.

A variety of other internships are also appropriate for government majors. Recent examples include internships at:

  • The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC)
  • The U.S. Department of Justice
  • The Norwegian Embassy
  • The Mexican Embassy
  • U.S. Senator John Thune’s Office
  • U.S. Senator Tim Johnson’s Office
