Language and Culture Seminars


CHINESE
Chinese Language and Culture. This seminar offers an introduction to Chinese language and culture. Visual materials will be included, and participants will explore the structure of the Chinese language.

FRENCH
Bon Voyage. An introduction to French-speaking countries, their cultures and their language. Specific customs will be discussed as well as the corresponding expressions.

GERMAN
How Germans Learn. A general overview of the German education system and the questions a comparison poses to the our system. This seminar provides general information and addresses fundamental questions of the goals of education. Designed for those without a special background in the field.

PORTUGUESE
Saúde e Género—Health and Gender in Brazil. This seminar offers an introduction to sexual and reproductive health and rights programs from a “gender perspective” designed by Promundo, an international NGO based in Rio de Janeiro, with support from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and USAID. This seminar is perfect for health educators, teachers, youth leaders or anyone interested in learning more about these programs and how to promote gender equity and reduce gender-based violence. Basics of the Portuguese language will also be introduced.

Introductory Mandarin Chinese. An introduction to the basic Chinese pronunciation system (Pinyin). Writing characters and alphabets for pronunciation will be included. Everyday Chinese will be emphasized.

Let's Learn Some French. An introduction to the French language including basic grammar, sentence structure, and basic language skills.

Quoi de neuf? A discussion topic-based course to enhance participants' existing French language skills.

Introduction to Brazilian Portuguese? An introduction to the Brazilian Portuguese language including grammar, sentence structure and basic language skills. This introduction is perfect for those wanting to vacation in Brazil, are thinking of attending the World Cup 2014, the Summer Olympic games in 2016 or would like basic knowledge of this beautiful Romance language.
