Hands-On Learning
Practice what you learn.
Though our nursing department has grown recently with the conscious intention of helping to alleviate the national nursing shortage, we’re all still on a first-name basis. Nursing students at Augustana are assigned an academic adviser right away, so you’ll never fade into the crowd here.
Early in your course of study, you’ll have hands-on experience with case studies and classroom simulations. You’ll practice care on our state-of-the-art interactive mannequin: It talks! It blinks! It complains when it hurts!
We also use the iClicker® Student Response System to turn lecture classes into interactive learning environments. We never stop asking, “How can we approach education in new ways?”
Special courses emphasizing real-world preparation include:
- A Leadership Practicum where students focus on the collaboration, delegation, and prioritizing skills that are essential to success in health care today.
- A five-week interdisciplinary Palliative Care program that puts Augustana nursing students in classes with medical, social work, pharmacy and chaplaincy students from around the region.
By your junior year, you’ll be participating in clinical experiences every week, working in a healthcare setting such as a hospital or health clinic under the supervision of an expert faculty member.
