Chemistry Stockroom Manager/Laboratory Prep Supervisor

Augustana College Chemistry Department is seeking a full time (12 month) Chemistry Stockroom Manager/Laboratory Prep Supervisor.

The position will begin August 1, 2008.

Qualifications include a Bachelors degree in Chemistry with work-related experience or a Masters degree in Chemistry required.

Salary is dependent on qualifications. Augustana College has excellent benefits.

1. Teach students how to do science by developing a “research-culture” in the Department that merges a vigorous student-faculty research program with the courses offered by the department and illustrates the team approach to problem solving which is ubiquitous in modern science.

2. Provide the comprehensive and rigorous program needed by those who plan a career in chemistry, the thorough chemistry background needed by those preparing for other science career paths, and a fundamental understanding of chemistry as science and technology in a liberal arts context.

Augustana College, a college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), is a selective, residential, undergraduate institution of over 1650 full-time students recognized for the excellence of its graduates and for its experienced, creative faculty. Sioux Falls, SD (metro area of 223,000) is a growing, diverse community with an active and progressive art scene which includes the recently renovated $32 million Washington Pavilion of Arts and Sciences, South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, SculptureWalk, Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society and the Visual Art Center. The city, a major medical, retail, and financial center, provides an exceptionally high quality of living in an affordable community environment.

The Chemistry Department is an ACS Approved department with four (soon to be five) tenure track faculty members. The department graduates 8-10 majors each year with 2-5 being ACS-Approved degrees. About 50% of graduates go to graduate school in Chemistry and another 25-30% go into other post-graduate programs like medical school, dental school, graduate school in other areas, etc.

The duties for this position are grouped into three categories:

Lab Prep Supervisor
1. Prep and set up labs for lower level courses (Chem 110-242) - single most important task.

2. Supervise student stockroom assistants (aid for all facets of the job).

3. Edit and publish lab manuals developed for lower level courses.

4. Track usage of reagents, equipment, and safety supplies for classes, identify what needs to be reordered. Track incoming orders.

5. In conjunction with faculty, develop new labs or adapt older ones to better fit learning objectives in courses.

6. Serve as “emergency” lab instructor when enrollments “surprise” us.

Stockroom Manager
1. Keep the stockroom clean and organized.

2. In charge of the inventory/deinventory process and ethanol storage and allocation. Update inventory/deinventory at least weekly, complete check of inventory and defrost refrigerators annually - inspect for secure labels, intact containers, tight lids, check appropriate stocks for peroxides, etc. and correct any problems. Maintain the computerized chemical inventory, providing updated copies to Maintenance, Fire Department, and others who require it.

3. Maintain minor instruments and train assistants in their use. Calibrate balances at least weekly, maintain pH electrodes, make sure instruments are set up and ready to use in classes when needed.

4. In charge of inventorying the key cabinet (look for missing keys, put keys away, etc) annually (after spring term) to identify missing keys to be reordered.

5. Help Chemistry Chair compile list of jobs to be addressed by summer assistants.

6. Develop and maintain an equipment and instrument inventory.

7. Coordinate removal of spent reagents. Work with faculty to identify outdated, unusable, and excess reagents in our inventory and then to devise a plan for removal/disposal.

Safety
1. In charge of running the fall and summer safety training workshops. In consultation with the faculty, design the content for the workshops and for “make-up” sessions. Maintain the appropriate paper trail for the training. Monitor any makeup training to see that it is completed in a timely fashion and appropriately documented. Coordinate with Chemistry faculty for updating training presentations, exercises, and exams.

2. Monitor departmental compliance with the CHHSP (Chemical Hygeine and Hazardous Substance Plan). Provide reminders to the Chemistry Chair and appropriate personnel when issues arise.

-Monitor compliance with lab safety rules (all personnel and students).
-Perform safety equipment inspections (hood, eyewash, safety shower, etc) periodically and correct deficiencies or report them to Maintenance and the -Chemistry Chair. Establish an appropriate schedule and maintain inspection records.
-Maintain safety supplies (mercury clean-up kits, spill clean-up, and Safety Islands). -Monitor and document clean up of spills and broken thermometers.
-Update safety signs annually: properly posted, phone numbers accurate, etc.
-Maintain collection of MSDS's - computer copies and hard copies, complete acquisition of hard copy for all chemicals in the inventory.
-Update the CHHSP (Chemical Hygeine and Hazardous Substance Plan) annually. -Send out a memo to the faculty for input on revisions and for a paper trail.
-Maintain records of student accident reports, emergency response reports, and exposure assessment reports. File Reports with other departments, agencies, etc. when required or requested.

3. Work with the Campus Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) to identify and prepare for regulation changes so they can be implemented in a timely fashion.

4. Be a consultant for the CHO and the campus on chemical-related safety issues.

Faculty and lab instructors directly supervise all labs with the help of student lab assistants. Several student lab assistants are assigned to stockroom duty each term to help with prep and stockroom work.

Typical lab prep breakdown by semester. There will be 10-20 hours per week of student assistant help.

Fall

-Intro to Chemistry (Chem 120) - 8 coordinated lab sections.

-Honors Into to Chemistry (Chem 120H) - 1 or 2 coordinated lab sections.

-Organic I - 3 coordinated lab sections.

-Organic II - 2 coordinated lab sections.

Interim (January)

-Inorganic Qual or similar course - 2 coordinated lab sections.

-Possibly other general or non-majors lab courses - will vary each year.

Spring

-Physical Science (Chem/Phys 115) - 2 coordinated lab sections (this course may move to Physics).

-Intro to Chemistry (Chem 120) - 2 coordinated lab sections.

-Survey of Organic and Biochem (Chem 145) - 8 coordinated lab sections.

-Organic I - 2 coordinated lab sections

-Organic II - 3 coordinated lab sections

-Analysis - 1 lab section.


Admission Counselor/Assistant Director

Augustana College is a selective, private, residential, comprehensive college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Housekeeping Manager

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain the Colleges facilities and equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, our established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the supervisor, to assure that a successful housekeeping program is carried out at all times. Every effort has been made to make this job description as complete as possible. However, it in no way states or implies that these are the only duties that will be required to be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related to, or is a logical assignment to the position.

Organizational Relationships:
Reports to: Director of Facilities Operations. In the absence of the Director of Facility Operations, reports to the Director of Facilities.

Supervises: All housekeeping staff, both day and night shifts.

Education:
Must possess, as a minimum, a High School Diploma or GED Certificate.

Experience:
Minimum of 2 years supervising employees in housekeeping related activities.

A. Major Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Experience in analysis of work flow with department efficiency in mind. (Looking at the current hours and schedules)
  • Order all equipment and supplies for the housekeeping dept.
  • Maintain and repair all housekeeping equipment.
  • Schedule the duties for the housekeeping dept. for both day and night shifts.
  • Perform routine cleaning as needed.
  • Work with the Chemical suppliers to ensure that we are using the proper chemicals for the areas that are being cleaned.
  • Participate in continuing education to remain current with industry standards.
  • Pick up and deliver supplies and materials as needed.
  • Hold weekly meetings with the housekeeping staff, both day and night shifts.
  • Train staff, with the help of the chemical sales person, proper cleaning techniques.
  • Share ideas with new products in any of our buildings relating to housekeeping.
  • Participate in the performance reviews for all housekeeping staff.

B. Safety and Sanitation:

  • Follow all established safety procedures and precautions.
  • Maintain Augustana College in good repair, ensuring a safe, clean and orderly environment.
  • Report all unsafe conditions, defective equipment, etc., to your supervisor immediately.
  • Assure that work areas are clean and equipment, tools, supplies, etc., are properly stored before leaving such areas on breaks, end of workday.
  • Keep work areas free of hazardous conditions (i.e., spills, excess supplies, etc.).
  • Assure that established Infection Control and Universal Precautions practices are followed when performing housekeeping procedures.
  • Use and handle chemicals, compounds, solvents, etc. according to OSHA established guidelines.
  • Follow established disaster safety policies and procedures.

C. Equipment and Supply Functions:

  • Report equipment malfunctions or breakdowns to your supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Assure housekeeping supplies have been replenished in work areas as necessary.
  • Keep supervisor informed of supply needs.
  • Assist others and ask for assistance when lifting heavy equipment, supplies, etc.

D. Students Rights:

  • Maintain the CONFIDENTIALITY of all student’s information.
  • Honor the student’s personal property.
  • Check for permission to enter before entering a student’s apartment or dorm room.

E. Working Conditions:

  • Works in all areas of facilities.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset students, family members, staff.
  • Works beyond normal working hours, in other positions temporarily, when necessary, and will be on-call for emergency Housekeeping situations.
  • Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
  • Works on weekends and holidays, as necessary.
  • May be required to work in cramped spaces and in adverse weather conditions.

F. Specific Requirements:

  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, to follow instructions, and to accept constructive criticism.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, students, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., and maintain the appearance of the housekeeping work areas.
  • Must have the ability to minimize waste of supplies, misuse of equipment, etc.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing housekeeping practices.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
