Additional Information:

Chemistry Department Vision: To be a premier Chemistry Department in a premier, church-related college in America.

Teach students how to do science by developing a “research-culture” in the Department that merges a vigorous student-faculty research program with the courses offered by the department and illustrates the team approach to problem solving which is ubiquitous in modern science.

Provide the comprehensive and rigorous program needed by those who plan a career in chemistry, the thorough chemistry background needed by those preparing for other science career paths, and a fundamental understanding of chemistry as science and technology in a liberal arts context.

Augustana College, a college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), is a selective, residential, undergraduate institution of over 1650 full-time students recognized for the excellence of its graduates and for its experienced, creative faculty. Sioux Falls, SD (metro area of 223,000) is a growing, diverse community with an active and progressive art scene which includes the recently renovated $32 million Washington Pavilion of Arts and Sciences, South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, SculptureWalk, Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society and the Visual Art Center. The city, a major medical, retail, and financial center, provides an exceptionally high quality of living in an affordable community environment.

The Chemistry Department is an ACS Approved department with five tenure track faculty members. The department graduates 8-10 majors each year with 2-5 being ACS-Approved degrees. About 50% of graduates go to graduate school in Chemistry and another 25-30% go into other post-graduate programs like medical school, dental school, graduate school in other areas, etc.

In recent years summers have been increasingly devoted to research and thus there is increasing emphasis on securing outside funding. The tenure-track faculty have active research programs and have engaged 8-19 students each summer for the last several years. Currently we have funding from the Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center (NSF, http://www.usd.edu/npurc/homepage.cfm) and BRIN (NIH). Most of our research students present their work at the ACS Midwest Regional Meeting or National Meeting. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to pursue research with Augustana students.

Augustana operates on a 4-1-4 calendar. During the regular semester the teaching load is typically two courses - a course being typically 3 hours of lecture and 2-4 hours of lab (1 or 2 two-hour labs or 1 four-hour lab). Course assignments for this position will be centered on a traditional Organic Chemistry year-long course, but will also depend on expertise and departmental needs. We are exploring team-teaching in some courses to better model the team approach to science (a small step toward our vision) and hopefully to reduce teaching loads a bit (target is 12 contact hours). We anticipate a schedule something like:

Fall: Team-teach Chem 201 Organic I with responsibility for two lab sections (4 hour labs) plus one lab section for Chem 202 Organic II (no lecture responsibility). We anticipate a total enrollment of 50-60 students in Organic I, mostly Biology majors, split into three lab sections.

Interim: Team-teach a Chemistry topics course entitled Topics in General Chemistry - Beyond Chem 120. Chem 120 Intro to Chemistry is a one-semester course covering the topics usually covered in a two-semester sequence. In lieu of a second semester general chemistry course, our ACS Approved major requires a lower level inorganic course of some sort. Biology and Physics Engineering majors also need a similar inorganic course. We typically offer an Inorganic Qualitative Analysis course which has a heavy inorganic content, especially in the lab. We have proposed this Topics course to meet that need without requiring detailed expertise in inorganic chemistry. We envision this course as something similar to a Gen Chem 2. The Department will offer a rough outline of topics for the lecture and suggest several labs, but instructors will be allowed considerable latitude in the final design of the course. The other team member for this course will be an adjunct instructor yet to be identified. The Interim (January term) is 18 days long, so to get in the required class and lab time, there will be two hours of lecture (8-10 am) and three hours of lab (11-2) each day. We anticipate enrollments requiring two labs; plans are to offer both labs at the same time with each instructor covering one.

Spring: Team-teach Chem 202 Organic II with responsibility for two lab sections (a continuation of the Fall course with primarily the same students, anticipate 50-60 students, three lab sections) plus one lab section for Chem 201 Organic I (no lecture responsibility).

The Chemistry Department has a nice collection of instruments available for use in classes and for research.

The Department needs instructor(s) for two classes:

Fall
In Fall 2008, the Department needs one instructor for Chem 120 Intro to Chemistry, lecture 8-8:50 MWF with lab section A1 8-9:50 T. This course is a one-semester course covering the topics usually covered in a two-semester sequence. It is a fast paced course taken by students majoring primarily in Chemistry, Biology, Nursing, Engineering Physics, Exercise Science. Each section has 40-48 students which are split into two lab sections. The instructor is responsible for the lecture and one of the lab sections (a lab instructor handles the other lab). The lab schedule is coordinated with all the other sections of Chem 120 (total of 8 lab sections). We employ chemistry majors as lab assistants, but the instructor is in charge of the lab and expected to be present.

Interim (January Term)
Chem 197 Topics in General Chemistry - Beyond Chem 120 expands on general chemistry topics that received light attention in Chem 120. The instructor will team-teach the lecture (8-10 daily) with a leave replacement and each will handle one lab section (11-2 daily). We expect 35-40 students.

In lieu of a second semester general chemistry course, the ACS approved major requires a lower level course with an inorganic flavor. Biology majors often use the course to fulfill a similar requirement for medical school. This Topics course is being offered to allow the faculty involved to tailor the course to their backgrounds and interests. The Department will help in designing this course by providing a potential outline and suggestions of some labs, but the instructors will have considerable flexibility in establishing the final syllabus.

This course will build on experiences in Chem 120 through expanded discussions on several topics. Discussion topics will begin with redox chemistry, bonding, nuclear chemistry, and colligative properties, then expand to others of interest as time allows. The course will include a lab experience supportive of the lecture. There will be 2 hr of lecture and 3 hr of lab each day. This course fulfills a requirement for the ACS Approved Chemistry major. Prerequisite: Chem 120.
