Admission Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are freshmen allowed to have a car on campus?

A. Yes. A car can be helpful to get around, but is not necessary to get places. Augustana is centrally located in Sioux Falls and is within walking distance of banks, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. If you bring a car, a parking permit is required. The cost is $120/year.

Q. What are the admission requirements?

A. For general admission, you should have college preparatory classes with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. The classes we recommend you take include English (4 years), Math (4), Science (4), Social Studies (3), Fine Arts (1), Computer Science (1), and at least two years of foreign language. You should have an ACT composite score of at least 20 (or SAT of 950). Finally, we will also consider an applicant's extracurricular activities, leadership, and admission essay.

Q. What types of placement tests or proficiency exams or credit do you offer/accept?

A. Augustana College offers the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) testing for credit. The testing fee is $65. Foreign language placement for first-year students occurs online prior to registration. Transcripted foreign language credit may be received if the student completes an advanced course with a grade of at least C- and if the student pays the transcripting fee ($75). The College also accepts Advanced Placement (AP) test scores for credit. Students must score a 4 or 5 to receive credit. There are no additional fees for AP credit. Click here for more specific proficiency exam information.

Q. Who is required to live on campus?

A. As a residential college, we affirm the value of living in community together and therefore require students to live on campus for three years from the time of high school graduation.

Q. What percentage of the students live in college-owned housing?

A. Over 2/3 of our full-time students choose to live in college-owned housing.

  • 97% of the Freshmen
  • 80% of the Sophomores

Theme Housing is a popular on-campus housing option for upper-level students. We also have a progam called Senior Singles. This program allows eligible seniors to live in a single room for the price of a double.

Q. Is there a different cost for in-state versus out-state students?

A. No. The cost is the same for South Dakota residents and residents of other states or countries.

Q. How many computers are available, and are they accessible on a 24 hour basis?

A. The student to computer ratio is 5:1. This ratio does not include the personal computers students bring from home. Many labs are available on a 24 hour basis, including a computer lab in each resident hall.

Q. Do you recommend bringing a computer from home?

A. Having your own computer is helpful, but not a necessity. All of the resident hall rooms are wired for cable and high-speed internet connection. Each residence hall and every academic building has a computer lab. Most common areas have wireless internet access.

Q. Is there an application deadline?

A. Augustana College admits students on a rolling basis. We recommend working on the application during the summer prior to your senior year, or the fall of your senior year. January 15 is the priority application date for scholarship eligibility.

Q. I have completed some post-secondary work at another college. Will Augustana accept this credit?

A. In general, if you complete courses at a regionally accredited college or university with at least a "C-" grade, credit will be accepted. For more specific information on the required accreditation please refer to the Augustana College Transfer Guide. Post-secondary work completed prior to high school graduation is subject to approval of the Associate Academic Dean/Registrar and is generally limited to 32 credit hours.

Q. When are your campus visit days?

A. We will hold several visit programs throughout the year. Upcoming visit days are listed on the admission home page. These days are a great way to check out Augustana, but we'd also be happy to visit with you personally. Check your schedule and call to arrange a campus visit structured to meet your goals.
