STUDY ABROAD AND INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
In 2006-2007, nearly 220 students will have participated in international educational experiences. 44% of Augustana students travel abroad during college.
-
Semester and Year-long Study Abroad: Approved programs are in Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and Wales.
-
UMAIE Trips: Augustana College is a member of the Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education. This consortium of seven colleges and universities offers courses abroad during January Interim. 2007 UMAIE courses studied music and religion in India, urban development in Italy, and history in Egypt, to name just a few. Augustana's own Sam Ogdie (Spanish) offered "Arab and Jewish Influence in Spain and Morocco", Muriel Larson (Nursing) taught a course on the history of health and healing in Greece, Reynold Nesiba (Economics) and Bill Swart (Sociology) led "Australia in the Global Economy", and Patrick Hicks (English) and Margaret Preston (History) offered "The Disunited Kingdom: History, Literature, and Social Reconciliation in Northern Ireland."
-
Spring Break Trips: Each spring, Augustana faculty members lead one-credit, ten-day trips abroad. Offerings for 2007 include "Nicaragua: coffee, CAFTA and Caldera" with Reynold Nesiba (Economics), "The Lion, Unicorn, and the Literary Wardrobe" in England with Sandra Looney (English), "Germany and Poland in the shadow of the Holocaust" with Geoffrey Dipple (History), "England, Changing Identities" led by Patrick Hicks (English), and "History and Philosophy in Classical Athens" with David O'Hara (Philosophy) and Jeff Johnson (History).
-
HECUA: Through the College's participation in the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs, our students participate in the South American Urban Semester, the Scandinavian Urban Studies Program, as well as Literature, Ideology, and Society in Latin America. HECUA also offers a Metro Urban Studies Term and the City Arts Program, both in Minneapolis, MN.
-
Washington, D.C. Semesters: Students interested in politics and public policy choose from two programs. The theme of the Lutheran College Semester in Washington, D.C. is Ethical Issues and Public Affairs. Students register for two seminars, an internship, and a course in directed reading. The Washington Semester Program of the American University in Washington, D.C. is an intensive educational/internship experience in several fields of study, including American politics, U.S. foreign policy, law, peace and conflict resolution studies, economics, journalism, and art.
-
Student Teaching Abroad: Education majors can have a national or international experience while completing their student teaching. 50% of our education majors choose to stay in South Dakota to student teach. The other half spend the semester in diverse locations, including Alaska, California, Colorado, Washington State, and inner-city Nashville, as well as Peru, Japan, Norway, Germany, China, Switzerland, India, and Papua, New Guinea.
-
Siouxland Export Assistance Center: An agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Siouxland Export Assistance Center is based in Augustana's Department of Business Administration. Our students enjoy unique international internship experiences through the Center, which provides business owners in South Dakota and Northwestern Iowa with assistance in either exporting start-ups or expanding into additional overseas markets.
- Washington State Crime Lab: For students who aspire to a career in crime scene investigation, Augustana offers a standing internship in Forensic Chemistry with the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab in Spokane, WA. The internship takes place over January Interim and is supervised by Augustana alumnus Matt Jorgenson, '95. Housing, meals, transportation, and entertainment (think skiing!) are provided by the Jorgenson family.
Offered by Campus Ministry, Service-Learning Trips are very popular ways to spend spring break. Groups travel to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in western South Dakota, a soup kitchen in Manhattan, Holden Village in Chelan, Washington, Habitat for Humanity in the Phoenix, Arizona area, and an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico.

OFF-CAMPUS RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES
Augustana students from all academic disciplines bring learning to life as they encounter the world. Whether on a faculty-led trip, spending the summer in a research center, or a visit to a national conference, Augustana students have the opportunity for new and unique experiences as they explore their academic interests. Following are a few examples:
