Student Life
There are a wealth of activities and programs international students are invited to take part in, both on campus and in the Sioux Falls community. The Dean of Students Office serves the student body and the campus community by providing leadership for a wide variety of services and programs including the following areas:
Augustana Athletics. Sixteen teams compete in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics for the Augustana Vikings. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. Women's sports are: basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Division II athletics in the United States is very competitive and a limited number of athletes are able to play, but international students are encouraged to try out.
Recreational Services. Many students choose to play intramural sports at Augustana. In intramurals, students compete against other Augustana students, and though some games may be highly competitive, the emphasis is on fun and recreation. There are well over 50 intramural leagues and club teams that students may join, including soccer, volleyball, flag football, basketball, ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf, ping pong, lazer tag, racquetball, ski club, soccer club, Kong Su Do club, and hockey club. In addition, the Elmen Center provides several venues for exercise and recreation including a swimming pool, health club-like weightroom complete with free weights, eliptical machines, treadmills, exercise bicycles, as well an aerobic program and sauna.
Activities and Student Organizations. You'll never be bored at Augustana College. With concerts like O.A.R. and Widespread Panic, speakers like Al Gore and Maya Angelou, clubs such as Green, the Augieholics, the International Club, the Augustana Student Association, Dance Express, Art Club, El Club Español, Deutsch-Klub, Le Cercle Francais, Outreach Ministires, Union Board of Governers (bringing entertainment to campus), S.A.L.T. (Service and Learning Together), or the Pre-Med. Club, there are seemingly endless things to do.
Music, Theatre and Art. Among the things Augustana is best known for are the fine arts. There are a number of band, choral and orchestral opportunities for students interested in music. The Augustana Theatre Company puts on several theatrical productions each year. The Center for Visual Arts, completed in 2006, is a state-of-the-art facility for aspiring painters, sculptors, drawers, and potters.
Career Center. The Career Center has friendly staff available to assist students with finding internships, placements, and related activities such as mock-interviews. For international students eligible to work, the Career Center also maintains a listing of full-time and part-time employment opportunities. Along with Augustana's professors, the Career Center helps students with their applications and placement in graduate schools as well.
The Mirror and KAUR FM. Augustana's student media sources, The Mirror (newspaper) and KAUR (radio) provides many chances for students to become involved as well as providing the campus with news, information and entertainment.
Campus Ministry. Augustana College is affiliated with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). Students have a number of opportunities to get involved with worship services, outreach, youth ministry and more. The campus ministry team is available to counsel students seeking spiritual guidance as well.
