Joey Ryan
Class of 2007
Hometown: Forest Lake, MN
Major: Communication/Business
Extracurricular Activities: Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Astronomy Club, Men's Basketball Team
Joey, how and why did you choose your major?
My decision to become a business/communication major is interesting. I initially wanted to try to major in music, however, it was nearly impossible to do because of conflicts with basketball. So, from there, I really just thought that I wanted a major that was general in nature so it could be applied somewhere within the music industry. Then, by building connections with people in the music industry through playing in my band, "The Exchange" I will hopefully find something within that business realm that suits my interests.
Is it difficult to balance basketball and academics at Augustana?
At times, yes, it is very difficult. It is particularly difficult when our team goes on long road trips, which forces us to complete things in advance and be very on top of things. However, I have also found it very useful being a student athlete because it forces you to divide and use your time well.
What is the most unexpected thing you have done or experienced during your college career at Augustana?
I'd say either when a jackrabbit was thrown from the crowd during our game against SDSU my freshman year and almost hit a player while he was shooting a freethrow, or, when the student section threw a coyote on the floor at the Arena this year during our game against USD.
What is the best class you have taken at Augustana? Why?
Either Religion 229 [Reading for Meaning and Truth with Hermes, God of Thieves and Interpreters] with Professor Swanson because he is one of the most intelligent people I know and he really makes you think, or Economics with Professor Nesiba because he somehow turned Econ. into one of the most exciting classes I have had.
What is your favorite Augustana hangout spot?
I like to have a cup of hot chocolate in the Commons from time to time.
What is your favorite meal in the Commons?
Either chicken nuggets or nachos.
Looking back on your senior year of high school, why did you choose Augustana?
I was recruited for basketball, but more importantly, the quality of the school, and the kindness of everyone that I talked to on my visit.
Do you have any plans for after graduation?
The band I play in has recorded two cd's. After graduation we plan to start touring and playing full time. After that, I'm really not sure, I just hope to have music play a role in my career in some way. And if that doesn't work out, I'm sure I'll figure soemthing out.
What will you miss most about Augie after graduation?
Dave Medema.
