Julie Nguyen
Class of 2009

Hometown: Worthington, MN

Major: Nursing

Extracurricular Activity: College/Community Band

How did you choose your nursing major?
I began to take an interest in nursing when I was a junior in high school. I did a lot of research on the career and finally made the decision to go for it, based on the idea of being a traveling nurse. I have always wanted to travel, but I also wanted to go into a career where I can be of help to others. What other career offers such great opportunities?

Do you plan to participate in any study abroad or other off-campus programs?
I look forward to studying abroad sometime in the near future, but I haven't decided where yet. There are so many study abroad programs offered here that it is hard to decide which one to go on.

Looking back to your senior year of high school, why did you choose Augustana?
The distance from my hometown to Augustana was just right- not too close and not too far. Actually, everything about the college was right for me. The friendly atmosphere created by the people that help you get acquainted with the school, the student body; they were all welcoming. It seems like people remember your name here. It seems like home.

What is the best class you've taken so far at Augustana?
The best class I've taken so far is probably Spanish II taught by Señor Tomás Vivancos. His class is a fun learning experience where the students are encouraged to explore the culture of Spanish language. Señor Tomás makes the class feel like you are actually studying in a native Spanish-speaking country instead of here in the U.S. I look forward to attending his class everyday.

What is your favorite Augustana hangout spot?
My favorite Augustana hangout spot would be at the front desk of Bergsaker Hall, especially at night when lots of students hang around to chat. Sometimes we even set up a movie projector to show a movie or two.

What is your favorite meal on campus?
Steamed vegetables with mashed potatoes and meatloaf!

What is the most unexpected thing you have done during your time at Augie?
The most unexpected thing I've done during my college career at Augustana is participating in the College/Community Band because I hadn't played the flute in five years! I never thought about playing again until Professor Bruce Ammann encouraged me to join. I like the variety of people that participate- college students and people from the Sioux Falls community.

What advice would you give first year students at Augustana?
There are a wealth of friends, professors, and other people here to make you feel at home, so don't be afraid to ask questions. We all need help in one way or another!
