Regan Tekavec
Class of 2009

Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colorado
High School: Doherty High School

Majors: Business Communications and Sports Administration

Extracurricular Activities: Volleyball and Intramurals

How and why did you choose your major?
I originally chose Communications because I love writing and public speaking, but I changed to Business Communications because it covers a broader area, and I added Sports Administration (a new major here at Augie) because I love sports and hope to go into a sports-related field.

Looking back on your senior year of high school, why did you choose Augustana?
My choice ultimately came down to the fact that I just felt comfortable here. The people are so welcoming, and even though I was extremely homesick at first, it's so easy to make friends here that pretty soon I was so busy with new people and fun stuff that I hardly even thought about home.

What is the best class you have taken so far at Augustana?
Western Civilization! History isn't my strong point and the class itself is very challenging, but Dr. Mullin is such a great professor. He makes the class really enjoyable. (And hopefully he'll read this and give me an A on my final!)

You were selected for a travel stipend to go to Potsdam, Germany with 18 Augustana Trustees Scholarship winners. How were you selected? What was the trip like?
I was chosen through the Distinguished Scholars Competition which included an interview process and essay contest. The trip itself was definitely the time of my life. I met so many great people from Augie and from Germany and I want to go back as soon as possible. Ich Liebe Deutschland! (I love Germany!)

How do you feel that your experience in Germany as a freshman will affect your education at Augustana?
Being in Germany completely changed my view on the world in general and I now have a strong desire to experience different cultures. With Augie's great study abroad program, I can have the chance to do that. I'm hoping to spend next J-term (January interim term) in Rome!

What is your favorite part about playing volleyball at Augustana? Is it difficult to balance academics, volleyball, trips to Germany and Rome, and everything else about college?
My favorite part is definitely the girls on my team. We all get along really well and it makes playing together that much better. As far as being a student-athlete, it's all about time management. The bus to away games is a great place to get work done and getting work in advance always helps. I just have to remind myself to stay disciplined enough to get all my work done before I do other things I want to do. Some days, this can be quite a struggle!

What is the most unexpected or interesting thing you have done during your time at Augie?
Germany was hands down the best thing I've done all year, but there is always something going on here. Between all the concerts, comedians, sporting events and fun stuff, there is never a time when there is "nothing to do". The O.A.R. concert in April was definitely a high point of this year!

What is your favorite Augie hangout spot?
Between volleyball, intramurals, and watching other sporting events, I'm always at the Elmen Center. I think I may as well move in!

What's your best "dorm story" from Augustana?
There are way too many to share, but one time the fire alarm was set off accidentally while some of us happened to be in the shower. We had to stand outside in our towels dripping wet until they cleared the building. We couldn't stop laughing.

Do you have a career goal after graduation?
Well, graduation is quite a ways away for me, but I hope to someday be a Sports Information Director for a college athletic department.

What do you plan to do this summer?
I'll be spending this summer back at home with my family and interning at USA Volleyball. Hopefully there will be plenty of time for some camping and hanging out at the pool too!

What advice would you give prospective students considering Augustana?
Come! It's a great place to live and learn. I have never doubted my decision in coming here. Once you're here...get as involved as you can. Augie has so much to offer and it's a guarantee that you'll make plenty of great friends.
