Logan Lee
Class of 2010
Hometown: Conrad, Montana
Major: Undecided
Extracurricular Activities:
How and why did you choose your major?
I still haven't chosen a major, but I'm starting to lean towards religion and economics.
What is the best class you have taken thus far at Augustana?
So far my favorite is Economics 120 with Dr. Nesiba. The class was relatively hard but he was so random and off the wall all the time that class was always fun.
Looking back on last year, why did you choose Augustana?
Augustana had the friendliest atmosphere and not having to pay tuition was a nice incentive. [Logan was a full-tuition scholarship winner at the 2006 Distinguished Scholars Competition.]
Is it difficult being so far away from home?
I have really enjoyed the chance to make a new set of friends and basically start over. I do miss all the people I left in Conrad, especially because it is difficult to get home even over long breaks.
Describe your experience at the Distinguished Scholars Competition.
The highlight of that day was going back to the dorms and spending the night there. The competition was fine, but it wasn't nearly as much fun as hanging out without any pressure. I did really enjoy the interview. All of the professors were really nice and they kept the mood far less formal than I expected. It felt more like a conversation than an interview. Getting to see what dorm life was like here definitely made me want to come to Augie more, but it was the scholarship that resulted from the competition that really made my decision final.
What does a typical day at Augustana look like for you?
First semester I had early class everyday so I was usually up by 8:00 or 8:30, depending on the day. I spent most of my day attending class or doing homework and then attending choir and chamber choir in the late afternoon. At night I usually would hang out with friends or go swimming at the Elmen Center. I also attend many of the UBG events that are offered. [UBG, or Union Board of Governors, brings speakers, concerts, comedians, movies, and other entertainment to campus.]
Did you enjoy J-Term?
I certainly love getting up at 11:00 or so everyday for class and being able to focus on just one thing most of the time is really nice. I am especially looking forward to the J-term tour that the choir will take at the end of January.
Tell us about your extracurricular activities. What is your favorite part about being involved?
Right now most of my extracurricular activities are the choir and chamber choir. I also participate in intramural basketball and volleyball. I have really enjoyed getting to know people especially through the choir. I also like to participate in the random brief things that pop up like the Augie dance-off and the knowledge bowl.
What is your favorite Augustana hangout spot?
I usually just hang out in friends' rooms. I hear there are good places but I am usually too lazy to want to walk further than across the hall.
What is your favorite meal in the Commons?
Probably the chicken patties but I think that since I have only been here one semester I haven't experienced everything yet.
What advice would you offer prospective students who are considering Augustana?
I would probably just tell them that the atmosphere at Augie is great and it can be a great place for almost anyone. I would also tell them to get involved with some of the opportunities. There are an incredible number of things to do here and getting involved is the best way to find others who share your interests.
