Augustana follows a liberal arts academic tradition which allows students to take many courses outside their major or minor area(s) of study, providing them with a well-rounded background from which to draw upon after graduation. Graduates from liberal arts colleges can communicate effectively orally and in writing, critically think, apapt easily to new technology and changing workplaces, and are able to make connections between seemingly disparate fields - skills that are applicable in and transferrable to any career field. In the words of Augustana's Dr. Eric Wells, "the engineer that can design the highway overpass and then explain to the city council why the off-ramp needs to look the way it does is a valuable person to have around."
The course catalog lists course descriptions, major and minor requirements, as well as general education requirements. Some academic departments maintain their own departmental homepages as well. Augustana follows a "4-1-4" academic calendar, which means that students have a fifteen-week "Fall Semester" (September-December), followed by a four-week "Interim Semester" (January), followed by a fifteen-week "Spring Semester" (February - May) with breaks in between. Download the complete 2007-2008 (.pdf) and 2008-2009 (.pdf) academic calendars. Download tentative course offerings for Interim (January) Semester 2008 (.pdf) and Spring Semester 2008 (.pdf).
