Augustana College Transfer Guide

Augustana College annually attracts approximately 100 transfer students from a wide range of post secondary institutions: community colleges, junior colleges, public universities, and private colleges. As a transfer student to Augustana, you will be prepared for a life of career, service, and continuing enrichment. The College's academic programs are designed so that you will receive a broad, liberal arts education that is blended with your chosen professional goals.

The purpose of this Transfer Guide is to acquaint you with Augustana's transfer policies and procedures. Since each transfer student brings a unique set of academic credentials and career goals, it is important to make an appointment to visit personally with our Director of Admission, Adam Heinitz. He will review your previous coursework and provide an evaluation indicating how your college credits will transfer and the approximate time it will take you to complete a program of study at Augustana.

Admission and Credit Transfer

In general, if you have been enrolled in an associate or baccalaureate degree program at a regionally accredited college or university, you will be considered for admission if you have a minimum grade point average of 2.20 (4.00 scale). Credit will normally be accepted at Augustana from a college or university which holds accreditation from any one of the following regional accrediting agencies of schools and colleges:

Lecture and lab courses taken at an accredited college or university will be transcripted at Augustana. Any credit not used toward major or general education core requirements will be treated as an elective. The actual number of credits accepted for the major will be determined by the appropriate department chairperson.

If your coursework includes any credit obtained through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Augustana will grant credit provided those credits were from the CLEP Subject Examinations. You may earn as many as 32 semester credit hours (one full year) through satisfactory completion of these exams.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements are designed to provide a broad, liberal education and a mastery of at least one discipline. Completion of a major, 130 semester hours and a minimum grade point average of 2.00 are required.

Students from accredited community or junior colleges may apply a maximum of 65 credits hours toward bachelor's degree requirements. The remaining 65 hours must be completed at an accredited four-year institution. In addition, the final 30 credits must be taken in residence at the College.

The educational core of courses, "The Augustana Plan," provides graduates with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to improve their ability to reason and to communicate. In particular, there is emphasis given to skill development, foreign languages, and multicultural awareness. A capstone course, which is designed to help students draw together what they have learned, challenges students to consider the moral and ethical issues of life.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Augustana provides financial assistance to promising and qualified students through scholarships, grants, campus work opportunities, and loans. The College cooperates with federal, state, church, and private agencies in providing various forms of scholarship and grant assistance. In an effort to uniformly determine the need of students applying for financial assistance, Augustana uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must be admitted to the College prior to the determination of your financial aid eligibility.

Transfer Student and Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships

A number of $15,000 scholarships ($7,500/year) are awarded to oustanding community or junior college transfer students each year. If you possess a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, show evidence of community or service involvement, and will complete an Associate of Arts/Science degree or equivalent credit, you will be considered for these scholarships.

Application Process

A completed application file will contain the "Application for Admission and Scholarships," a high school transcript, transcripts covering all prior post-secondary work, and one recommendation. All forms may be obtained from the Office of Admission.
