  • Augustana String Quartet

Performing and visual arts at Augustana represent the heart of the arts in the Sioux Empire. Our long-standing tradition of excellence in the arts reaches out to all students—from majors preparing to enter professions as musicians, theatre and visual artists or arts educators, to those simply interested in the arts—and to members of the local community, who can attend multiple performances and exhibits throughout the year.

The Heart of the Arts

In music, students have the opportunity to participate in several wind, choral and string ensembles. Students can also learn from the professional players of the Augustana String Quartet, who are members of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra in residence at Augustana.

In the visual arts, our newly constructed Center for Visual Arts houses studios for printmaking, sculpture, painting, ceramics, drawing and graphic design, as well as galleries for professional and student exhibitions and a liturgical art center.

In theatre, student actors, musicians, designers and technicians produce four main stage productions per year and are involved in numerous student productions and organizations, including Brand Name Improv and Viking Varieties.

Outreach efforts to the local community include over 100 performances, concerts and exhibits, several camps, festivals and competitions hosted on campus, and the Sioux Falls arts scene also has much to offer our campus community.
