Description

It really will be the ultimate Alpine experience…after arriving in Frankfurt we’ll visit Heidelberg and see the medieval castle...travel through the Black Forest to Lucerne…enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Bernese Oberland…stop in Innsbruck, in the heart of the Austrian Alps…see the “Sound of Music” city of Salzburg and Munich, then the highlight, the Passion Play of Oberammergau…and finally, on to medieval Rotenburg before heading back to the US via Frankfurt.

Drawing crowds from all over the world, the Passion Play of Oberammergau is a musical drama of epic dimensions.  It’s staged every 10 years from May to October in the small, picturesque city nestled in the valley amidst Germany’s Bavarian Alps. According to the story passed down through generations, the Black Plague swept through Europe in 1633 when a villager inadvertently exposed the town to the epic disease.  After 84 people died, the survivors gathered and made a solemn oath:  if God spared them, every 10 years they would present a play depicting the last week in the life of Christ.
There were no more deaths.

Today, the play takes place on an open-air stage with covered auditorium seating for 4,700 and with a cast of over 1,000 locals.
