Augustana University believes that through fire prevention and educational programs lives truly can be saved. The Department of Campus Safety works closely with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and the Augustana University facilities staff to maintain a fire safe environment.
Each year the men and women of the Department of Campus Safety outreach to the campus community in many different ways to improve fire safety on our campus:
- Annual Residence Life Fire Safety Academy
- Fire Extinguisher Training
- Annual Recreational Services Staff Fire Training
- CPR and AED classes
- Fire drills and life safety inspections
- Participation in the September Campus Fire Safety month
- Working closely with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue
Augustana University is continually improving life safety equipment and technology on our campus. In 2009 and 2010 our two eight story residence halls had the existing fire alarm systems removed in their entirety and were replaced with all new components. This included main fire alarm panels, annunciator panels, pull stations, heat/smoke detectors and horn/strobes.
Additionally, a complete automatic, wet, fire suppression (sprinkler) system was installed throughout both buildings. Due to the height of the buildings, a new fire pump was installed to provide adequate water pressure and flow to the top floors. Also, a new wet manual, fire standpipe was installed in both buildings and a new fire hydrant installed in the vicinity of the north entrance driveway. The overall project came to a cost of approximately $3 million for both buildings.
