Spirituality at Augustana

Christian faith deeply values education -- scholarship and a quest for understanding are deeply regarded in seeking, growing, and expressing one's faith. As a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Augustana cherishes this tradition. Students' lives at Augustana are invigorated and strengthened by a sense of community strengthened by worship and service.

At Augustana, you will discover an embracing ecumenical community immersed in compassion and caring. You will be welcome at worship! You will come to know individuals of integrity -- faculty, administrators, and fellow students. You'll be stirred by music. You'll be respected for your positions and challenged to listen to and understand the questions and hopes of others.

There are plenty of ways to express, explore, and expand your faith at Augustana. The community worships each day. Outreach teams discover their gifts and delight in leading worship or youth retreats throughout the region. Students lead and participate in every part of campus ministry -- week night Bible studies and prayer groups; worship bands and acoustic groups; theological lectures; events sponsored by Catholics in Action, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and residence hall groups; and service on campus, in the community and across the country.

The campus pastor coordinates worship and student leadership and is available for counsel, encouragement, and support. Campus ministers seek both to be available for growth and support and to equip students to discover their gifts to minister to one another. The Augustana Student Congregation worships at 11:00 a.m. each Sunday morning that school is in session.

The Templeton Foundation, a nationally recognized non-profit foundation that promotes character development in college students, selected Augustana College to join a prestigious honor roll that includes only 100 colleges and universities in the country. The Templeton Guide, published by the foundation, identifies colleges that encourage students to understand the importance of personal and civic responsibility.

Developing faith, values, and moral principles is the heart and soul of an Augustana education.

"A liberal arts education is not merely about learning the components; it is about discovering the grace that holds us together -- as individuals and community. And it's about living it out. Campus ministry is here to help all of us practice living wholly, laughing wholeheartedly, loving, and being loved."

~ Rev. Paul Rohde,
campus pastor
