The Friends of the Center Award is given each year by the Board and staff of the Center to individuals who have provided outstanding service over a period of many years. The award was first presented in1982.

The Western America Award for Achievement

The Western America Award is given "for achievement" in any and all fields of endeavor that relate to the preservation and interpretation of the history and cultures of South Dakota, the Northern Plains, and the American West. The award itself is a medallion of bronze, designed by the late Ogden Dalrymple, himself a prize-winning medalist and sculptor. The award was first presented in 1976.
