Study Abroad / Off Campus Programs

Augustana College offers an educational program which is both international and intercultural in scope. Believing that interpersonal, intercultural, and international relations are a vital aspect of a student's education, the college regards the whole world as its classroom.

When we learn about others, we also learn about ourselves. As changes in communication make the world more interdependent, one of the best ways to increase our knowledge about ourselves is to study abroad or in an off-campus setting. The college years are an excellent time to learn about different cultures since student discounts, financial aid, and the freedom to live in another country or region of the United States exist. The time to start thinking about and planning for a study abroad or off-campus experience is now!

Curriculum

Augustana's approved programs range from full college course offerings to specialized study of art and drama; from courses taken with host-country nationals at their university to courses taught in English to American students. Credit earned in an approved study abroad program is accepted just like credit earned on campus. The length of the study abroad experience can be one month, one semester, or one academic year. We have a program to fit your needs.

Academic Guidelines

Programs are available for all students, however, the junior year is considered the best time to pursue a study abroad or off-campus experience. Students must meet the grade point average requirements for the program to which they are applying. Students must also exhibit emotional stability and maturity to participate in a study abroad or off-campus program.

Students participating in the study abroad program in a non-English speaking country should have two years of college level of study of the native language, and must either take courses taught in the native language or take a course which studies the native language.

Financial Guidelines

The fee for all students participating in an approved program will be the same as Augustana's comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board). If the cost of the study abroad program is more than the comprehensive fee, the student will pay the difference. Students enrolling in programs which do not include room and/or board will not have to pay the room and/or board portion of Augustana's comprehensive fee.

Most financial aid for which the student is eligible can be applied to the study abroad program. Depending upon the program, financial aid awards may be adjusted upward or downward. Students are required to consult with the Office of Financial Aid as a part of the study abroad or off-campus application process.
