HILDE MOUND SITE

(39LK7)

This site is a burial ground dating from the Middle Plains Archaic period. It was located on a hill overlooking Lake Madison, and was exposed by quarrying operations in 1981. Although called a Mound Site, there is no evidence to indicate the burials were once covered by mounds.

While ideal recovery and recording techniques could not be used on this site, observations and salvage of materials exposed resulted in the documentation of 17-18 individuals at the site in 7-10 burial areas (plan of site). Two radiocarbon dates were obtained, one of 3800±110 B.P. from bone of one of the burials, the other of 4040±100 B.P. on charcoal from a hearth.

Of particular interest are a series of preforms associated with the burials. A detailed study by Lueck suggests that the blanks from one of these burials show distinct pairings on the basis of size and weight. The reduction blanks are most comparable to caches of Archaic blanks recovered from a series of sites in Wyoming.
