PLAINS VILLAGE SITES OF THE MIDDLE MISSOURI

Currently, there are 556 inventoried properties within the
Middle Missouri Subarea that have been classified by various researchers
as representing villages. Many of these sites contain multiple components;
therefore the number of different village occupations represented (i.e.,
components) is over 700.
Not all of these 556 village sites are considered potential landmark properties.
The construction of the four reservoirs within the Middle Missouri Subarea
(Lake Sakakawea, Lake Oahe, Lake Sharpe and Lake Francis Case) inundated
at least 254 of the 556 reported village sites. Based on the criteria discussed
above, too little information is available for 49 of the remaining 302 sites
to allow a village classification. The 253 sites which can be defined as
villages are the specific focus of the theme study-supported, multiple property
nomination.

The actual landmark properties will be nominated individually.
Five village sites are already National Historic Landmarks:
Big Hidatsa (32ME12)
