| ART DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW |
|
Augustana's Department of Art aims to develop the visual awareness of
all members of the college community. We believe that visual awareness
also increases human awareness and contributes indispensably to the development
of a reasoning and imaginative human being. Art students increase their
knowledge and understanding of art through the study of art history and
in the studio, learn seeing skills, and to manipulate design principles
to organize shapes, colors, etc., whether two dimensional or three dimensional.
Fundamental to each student's growth is the critical analysis of the formal
aspects of their work, and the creative generation of visual ideas derived
from the Liberal Arts, and their own life experiences. The studio faculty, all practicing artists, help students through informal
discussions as well as classroom activities. They believe that an understanding
of art, whether from the past or present, depends on serious study and
involvement. The department stresses a foundation in drawing and design as a basis
for all visual art processes. Augustana's art graduates continue to enter
a wide variety of art and art related occupations. Youll be encouraged to explore a wide variety of art mediums -
sculpture, painting, ceramics, drawing, design, graphic art, art history,
printmaking and art education. Your instructors, all practicing artists,
will guide you through different disciplines as well as critical thinking
skills related to two-dimensional and three dimensional work. Throughout the sophomore, junior and senior years, faculty members will review your work to measure your progress. During your senior year, youll be expected to present an exhibit of your studio work at the Eide-Dalrymple Gallery on Augustanas campus.
