ART DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Augustana's Department of Art aims to develop the visual awareness of all members of the college community. We believe that visual awareness also increases human awareness and contributes indispensably to the development of a reasoning and imaginative human being. Art students increase their knowledge and understanding of art through the study of art history and in the studio, learn seeing skills, and to manipulate design principles to organize shapes, colors, etc., whether two dimensional or three dimensional. Fundamental to each student's growth is the critical analysis of the formal aspects of their work, and the creative generation of visual ideas derived from the Liberal Arts, and their own life experiences.

The studio faculty, all practicing artists, help students through informal discussions as well as classroom activities. They believe that an understanding of art, whether from the past or present, depends on serious study and involvement.

The department stresses a foundation in drawing and design as a basis for all visual art processes. Augustana's art graduates continue to enter a wide variety of art and art related occupations.

You’ll be encouraged to explore a wide variety of art mediums - sculpture, painting, ceramics, drawing, design, graphic art, art history, printmaking and art education. Your instructors, all practicing artists, will guide you through different disciplines as well as critical thinking skills related to two-dimensional and three dimensional work.

Throughout the sophomore, junior and senior years, faculty members will review your work to measure your progress. During your senior year, you’ll be expected to present an exhibit of your studio work at the Eide-Dalrymple Gallery on Augustana’s campus.

ART MAJOR AND MINOR REQUIREMENTS

ART MAJOR
Artistic talents vary, as do students’ career goals. The art major at Augustana varies from a minimum of 36 to 60 credit hours, depending on a particular student’s objectives and needs.

The base requirements for any art major:
• Drawing I and II
• Art History I and II
• Design I
• Ceramics I or Sculpture I
• Senior Seminar

PRE-PROFESSIONAL TRACK
A 53-60 credit hour major provides more in-depth preparation for admission to graduate programs in art or careers in graphic design. Emphases are available in Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Ceramics, Drawing, and Graphic Design.

GRAPHIC DESIGN EMPHASIS
There are four courses offered in graphic design. Students wishing to focus on this medium have access to the Art Department’s Mac lab. Frequently used programs include Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Quark Express, Painter, Flash (animation) and Adobe After Effects (animation/movie design).
Graphic design students have frequent opportunities to collaborate on design jobs for Augustana and Sioux Falls community organizations.

ART EDUCATION MAJOR
36-43 credit hours in addition to 38 teacher certification credit hours. This major prepares the student for teaching at the elementary or secondary level. Education courses are required.

PRE-ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM
Students should consult the College Catalog or talk with the Art Department Chair, Carl Grupp. Since several course options exist and requirements for schools of architecture vary, his advice will be invaluable in planning your program.
