ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM (ATEP)
STUDENT COMPETITIVE ADMISSION CRITERIA
RATIONALE FOR A COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS
A limited number of students are admitted into the ATEP on an annual basis. The following competitive admissions criteria are utilized to rank the applicants for admissions.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION
- A completed Application for Admission form submitted to the Program Director.
- A letter of intent as well as three letters of reference from a non-family member.
- The following courses must be completed with grades of “C” or better.
- PE 230 (First Aid and CPR) or valid First Aid/CPR certification
- PE 280 (Prevention & Care of Athletic Injuries)
- BIOL 110 (Biology & Human Concerns) or BIOL 120 (Biological Principles I)
- CHEM 120 (Introduction to Chemistry)
- PSYC 125 (Life-span Human Development) or PSYC 110 (Self and Others: Psychological Perspectives) or PSYC 115 (General Psychology)
Students may be enrolled in these courses at the time of application.
- At the time of application, a minimum of 100 documented clock hours of clinical observation under the direct supervision of a licensed or certified athletic trainer.
- A minimum cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. at the time of application.
- Successful completion of a physical examination, medical history, blood borne pathogen training, immunization record, Technical Standard document, and First Aid / CPR certification.
COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS
- The requirements for application are due April 1st of the year seeking acceptance.
- An interview with the Athletic Training Selection Committee is required.
- Applicant’s who fail to meet the above application requirements by April 1st, will not be granted an interview.
- Students are encouraged to complete the academic pre-requisites at Augustana College.
- Transfer courses will be accepted as fulfilling a pre-requisite course, if the transfer course is approved by the College registrar’s office.
- Transfer courses which are required for the Athletic Training major will be approved by the HPER Chairperson and/or the Program Director of Athletic Training.
- Applicants will be evaluated by the Athletic Training Selection Committee using a subjective and objective point’s scale. Criteria will include the applicants cumulative G.P.A., individual grades in the pre-requisite courses, number of documented observation hours, completion of pre-requisite requirements (physical exam, immunizations, BBP training, Technical Standards document, First Aid / CPR certification) and an interview in which the applicant will be able to verbally express their interest in the ATEP. The Selection Committee will objectively evaluate the applicant on their work ethic, appearance, enthusiasm, initiative, attitudes towards learning, punctuality and their ability to work with others. These attributes will be observed of the student while performing their clinical hours of observation.
- Based on accreditation requirements only a limited number of students are accepted into our ATEP. Admission points are awarded for each of the aforementioned admissions criteria. Each student applicant is ranked against all applicants seeking admission into our program on an annual basis. If there are more applicants than the number of spots available, only the top ranked students chosen by our Selection Committee will be accepted.
- Students will be notified of acceptance into the ATEP in writing by June 1st.
- Eligibility to apply for the program DOES NOT guarantee admission.
SELECTION COMMITTEE
The Athletic Training Selection Committee members will include the certified athletic training staff of Augustana College and the president or designee of the Athletic Training Students Association (ATSA). The Committee will rank each applicant using the subjective and objective competitive admission points’ scale.
PROBATION / DISQUALIFICATION
- Students who are not able to maintain a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A., will be placed on academic probation for one semester.
- Failure to reach a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. after one semester of probation will result in disqualification from the program.
- A student may be admitted into the program on probationary status. This is determined solely by the Program Director.
- Students who do not demonstrate professional behavior and/or progress through their didactic and clinical education programs will be placed on probation for one semester. Students who do not receive at least a letter grade of “B-” within the required Athletic Training prefix courses will be placed on probation for one academic semester and will be required to retake the course. Students who do not actively participate in the required clinical education experiences will be counseled by the Program Director. Students who are sick and/or injured must seek medical attention and provide verification to justify their absence. Students who fail to meet our clinical education requirements after being counseled by the Program Director will be placed on probation for one semester.
- Students placed on probation for unprofessional behavior and/or failure to progress through their didactic and clinical education programs after one semester of probation will be disqualified from the program.
- Unprofessional behavior includes:
- Students found guilty of a misdemeanor or criminal behavior.
- Students who fail to fulfill their didactic and clinical responsibilities.
- Students who demonstrate insubordinate behavior toward the staff or the program
ACCEPTANCE / RE-APPLICATION
All students who have officially applied for admission into the ATEP will be notified in writing by June 1st of their acceptance status. The Selection Committee will rank each prospective student and select the top applicants. Students who are denied acceptance into the ATEP may re-apply the following year. Students accepted on probation status must complete their deficiency by the end of the fall semester of the year in which they are accepted, failure to do so will result in disqualification from the ATEP.
Students who are denied acceptance into or disqualified from the ATEP are unable to actively participate in clinical education through the ATEP or to enroll in the following didactic courses: AT 101, AT 201, AT 301, AT 315, AT 350, AT 355, AT 370, AT 371, AT 395, AT 401, AT 451, and AT 495.
