ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The educational and behavioral objectives of Augustana College's Athletic Training
Education Program (ATEP) strive to prepare Athletic Training Students (ATS) as allied health
care professionals. The following educational and behavioral objectives comprise
the role of the Certified Athletic Trainer:
- Students will be prepared to practice the profession of Athletic Training
by utilizing the skills obtained through effective learning of the cognitive,
affective and psychomotor domains.
- Students will be able to identify injury and illness risk factors
associated with participation in competitive athletics and will be able to plan
and implement all components of a comprehensive athletic injury and illness
prevention program.
- Students will be able to conduct a thorough initial clinical evaluation
of injuries and illnesses commonly sustained by the competitive athlete. Students
will be able to formulate an impression of the injury or illness for the primary
purposes of administering proper first aid and emergency care and making appropriate
referrals to physicians for diagnosis and medical treatment.
- Students will be able to provide appropriate first aid and emergency
care for acute athletic injuries and illnesses according to accepted standards
(American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or equivalent) and refer injured
and ill athletes to appropriate medical/paramedical personnel for evaluation
and diagnosis and follow-up care.
- Students will be able to plan and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation
and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by the competitive
athlete.
- Students will be able to plan, coordinate, and supervise all administrative
components of an athletic training program including those pertaining to health
care services (physical examinations and screening, first aid and emergency
care, follow-up care and rehabilitation), financial management, training room
management, personnel management and public relations.
- Students will be able to provide health care information and counseling
to athletes, parents, and coaches on matters pertaining to the physical, psychological,
and emotional health and well-being of the athlete.
- Students will be able to interpret the role of the Certified Athletic
Trainer as a health care provider, promoting Athletic Training as a professional
discipline, and providing instruction in athletic training and sports medicine
subject matters.
- Students will be able to realize their own personal strengths or weaknesses
in the Athletic Training profession and continue to achieve continuing education.
- Students will be prepared to practice the profession of Athletic Training
when working cooperatively with allied health care personnel including but not
limited to physicians, physician assistants, chiropractors, physical therapists,
occupational therapists, sports psychologists, sports nutritionists, nurses,
exercise physiologists and hospital/clinic administrators.
