Our ATEP provides students with an outstanding educational foundation to be successful within the Athletic Training profession. The Athletic Training Students (ATS) of our program are an integral component of the sports medicine services we are able to deliver to the NCAA Division II athletes of Augustana College. Through our diverse clinical education program, ATS also participate in supervised hands-on clinical experiences with our Approved Clinical Instructors (ACIs) whom provide sports medicine services to local high schools, colleges and sports medicine clinics. ATS are also afforded opportunities to gain clinical experience with our teams physicians, local chiropractic clinics, physical therapy clinics, human performance programs and with local semi-professional sports teams.
Board of Certification Examination/Employment Opportunities
Upon the successful completion of our ATEP, students will receive a bachelor-of-arts degree in Athletic Training and are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination to become certified athletic trainers. Certified athletic trainers have a variety of career opportunities to become employed in hospitals and sports medicine clinics, high schools, colleges and universities, human performance programs, industrial settings and with professional sports teams.
Certified Athletic Trainers
Certified athletic trainers are highly qualified health care professionals who are educated and experienced in delivering health care services to physically active patients. A certified athletic trainer's duties include providing risk management and injury prevention, assessment and evaluation, emergent and acute care, rehabilitation and health care administration of common injuries and illnesses to physically active patients. Certified athletic trainers work closely with physicians and other allied health care professionals on a daily basis.
Academic Preparation
Our ATEP is housed within the department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER). Students are required to complete 61 academic credit hours within the HPER department in addition to meeting the general education requirements of the College. Our ATEP curriculum is a three-year sequenced didactic and clinical education program which is designed to ensure that our ATS have the knowledge and psychomotor skills necessary to become successful within the Athletic Training profession.
