Research Interests
The focus of my research is the communication that occurs between different species of bacteria that compose human dental plaque. This communication includes physical contact between cells and metabolic interactions between organisms in the dental plaque biofilm. My current research focus is communication that occurs between two members of the plaque community, Veillonella atypica and Streptococcus gordonii . When these organisms are growing together , S. gordonii induces expression of an amylase gene that is not expressed when the organisms are grown separately. My goals are to identify the mechanism of signaling between these species and find the genes involved. Another goal is to determine the importance of the changes in expression to development of the dental plaque biofilm.
