Research and Writing

1. Textbook writing:

A majority of my time over the past fifteen years has been devoted to writing and revising a microbiology textbook and accompanying laboratory manual. The third editions of Microbiology and Laboratory Exercises in Microbiology were published in 1996, and preparations for the fourth edition are already underway. The text is used in courses for both biology/microbiology majors and nurses in four year baccalaureate programs. It has been adopted for courses in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and elsewhere.

2. Research on the effects of toxic metals:

My current research focuses on toxicology and algae. Because of widespread distribution and major ecological importance of fresh water diatoms, much of my research focuses on the effects of toxicants on these algae. We are growing the diatoms Navicula and Synedra in the presence of varying concentrations of metals like mercury and copper and looking for changes in diatom morphology, growth, and metabolism. At present, we are measuring growth rates and studying toxicant-induced morphological changes using the scanning electron microscope.
