Research Facilities and Equipment at Augustana College
The following equipment is located within the Biology Department or individual investigators' laboratories of the Gilbert Science Center at Augustana College: Cepheid Smart Cycler for real time PCR, Perkin-Elmer thermal cyclers, Agilent Bioanalyzer, Olympus confocal scanning laser microscope, scanning densitometer, Leica inverted microscope with DIC and fluorescence, dissecting fluorescent microscope, fluorescence microscope, research quality light microscopes and phase contrast microscopes, scanning densitometer, digital imaging station with 16-bit camera for imaging DNA gels, protein gels and chemiluminescent detection, digital video editing workstation, multifunction spectrofluorimeter plate reader with fluorescent and luminescent capability, liquid scintillation counter, gamma counter for immunoassays, isotope ratio mass spectrometer, ultra-low background gamma counter for 210-Pb radioisotope dating, microplate reader for enzyme immunoassays, UV cross-linker, several types of spectrophotometers, centrifuges, microcentrifuges, respirometers, biosafety cabinet for tissue culture, CO2 incubators, bacterial incubators, -80°C freezer, and other standard lab equipment.
Faculty members have dedicated research labs for student faculty research. In addition, facilities in the Gilbert Science Center include a triple environment greenhouse, a growth chamber room with four environmental growth chambers, a field vehicle, a boat, and gear for terrestrial and aquatic field studies. Computers, including a wide variety of Macintosh and Windows-based microcomputers, are available for student use.
