The American Cancer Society
Mark Ellerbusch, Class of 2008

The American Cancer Society is the nation’s largest non-profit organization. The Society works to prevent cancer and diminish suffering through education, advocacy, research and service. My work as a Media Relations intern provided me great experience. I immensely enhanced my business writing skills by writing press releases, articles, and media alerts. This position also taught me how to handle and meet media deadlines. The largest projects I worked on were the South Dakota and Iowa newsletters. These pieces were difficult and time-consuming, but I take a great deal of pride in the work that I produced. Along with the large amount of writing assignments, a Media Relations intern is expected to communicate well with both co-workers and people in the media industry. The people at the American Cancer Society are professional and extremely helpful to interns who may not have all the answers. I truly enjoyed my internship at the American Cancer Society. I would recommend working as an intern at the Society to anyone who is planning a career in the media industry, the non-profit industry, or any other part of business.
