The Ranch Family Restaurant

My internship at The Ranch Family Restaurant was a wonderful opportunity. It allowed me to learn a great deal about what goes on in the back of the house in the restaurant business. I learned how to staff and train employees by making up schedules and learning how to manage the labor. I inventoried all foods and non-foods, ordered through their distributors and priced the items. I completed payroll for each period, learning all about overtime, payroll taxes, and different salaries for each position. In the accounts payable category, I learned how to keep organized with all bills going out throughout the month. I used many marketing and advertising skills by setting up new items for summer menus and setting up ideas for road signs, radio ads, commercials and newspapers. I eventually learned how to put all this together. Working in this environment allowed me to have a hands-on experience. It also allowed me to use many of my business classes, such as accounting, marketing, and management, throughout the internship experience. I can use the knowledge I have gained from this experience to help me explore other fields of business I am interested in. I feel that I learned a great deal and want to explore other fields of business I am interested in. I feel that I learned a great deal and am thankful to both the Ranch and Augustana for providing me with this opportunity.
