Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington
Mairead Kelly, Class of 2008
Everyone interested in the non-profit sector should consider a development internship with Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington! It will prove to be an invaluable, life-changing experience. Samaritan Ministry is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people who are homeless or in need to help themselves. They provide services such as housing and employment counseling, coaching, motivation, and so much more to over 1200 participants every year.
Over the course of my internship, I worked on various projects like assisting with preparing foundation application packages, drafting and sending foundation thank you letters, coordinating an auction, designing a program book for an event, helping plan fundraising events, and other related activities. I also attended classes at the DC Foundation Center on specific fundraising issues for non-profit organizations.
This internship is set in Washington, D.C. where currently there is one of the highest rates of homelessness in our nation. It is a rewarding opportunity to work towards the betterment of our society and to learn, first-hand, the functions of a non-profit organization and how it puts its mission into action.
