I completed a 160 hour internship in the Human Resources Department of StarMark Cabinetry in Sioux Falls. I was able to work not only for Mike Ebbing, the department director, but also for two other people in the office, and therefore had a very broad range of experiences. My main project was to rewrite the job descriptions for many of the plant positions and an administrative position. I used previous job descriptions as a template, observed workers in the position for about an hour each, and then created the new job descriptions for the positions. I was also able to help with new hire orientation by preparing training packets, and organizing paper work and employee files. I created a presentation and script for a training program to re-educate both plant and administration employees and supervisors about harassment and discrimination in the workplace. I was also able to observe issues relating to unemployment, terminations, employee relations, benefits, FMLA, and interviewing/recruiting. It was a great experience to work in such a friendly environment and to be able to experience such a broad range of human resource functions.
