If anything is sure about today's business climate, it's that it's sure to change.Augustana's Department of Business has a long tradition of preparing its graduates for graduate school and successful careers in business. In response to the increased complexity, sophistication, and globalization of the business world, the Augustana business curriculum has evolved. It provides a strong balance between the liberal arts foundation, traditional business courses, and practical work-experiences outside the classroom. The Liberal Arts FoundationThe Business Administration Department of Augustana College is committed to the development of broadly educated, ethical professionals whose skills, understanding, and compassion empower them to be active participants and contributors during their life of career, service, and continuing achievement. Successful participation in and contribution to business is predicated on the skills which embody a liberal arts curriculum, namely: to think critically and communicate clearly. Students of the Business Administration Department benefit from a Core of Liberal Studies which provides exposure to written communication, oral communication, mathematical reasoning, history, natural sciences, human behavior and social institutions, languages, literature and fine arts, intercultural studies, religious studies, and the integration of faith and life. Traditional Business CoursesThe Business Administration Department of Augustana College offers majors in Business Administration and Accounting. The courses which support these majors represent the functional areas of business: accounting/finance, management, marketing, and law. The students are also afforded the opportunity to study inferential statistics, macroeconomics, and microeconomics. These "traditional" courses are taught with a forward-looking perspective: technology is integrated where appropriate and cutting-edge topics are addressed in the upper-division courses of finance, marketing, management, and accounting. Students who study in the Business Administration Department learn principles and under-lying theories then apply those principles to new and extended areas of the discipline. Practical Work-ExperiencesThe field experiences available to seniors provide an opportunity to put the classroom's theory into practice. Whether as an SBI team member or as an Intern, students are challenged to synthesize the totality of their educational experience. These experiences provide a setting where earlier career decisions are affirmed; career paths are identified; and life-long learning and networking begins. Learning Never StopsAt Augie you'll come to understand that little remains the same. Tools, theories, and techniques evolve. Climates and assumptions are anything but static. The key to life-long contributions to a profession is life-long learning, and knowing how to learn. The liberal arts foundation of the Augustana business curriculum provides students with the ability to observe, listen, question, and analyze. The business curriculum provides the students with the specialized knowledge which informs their observations, listening, questioning, and analysis. When blended, the Liberal Arts and Business curriculums provide students with an understanding of business systems and the ability to take those systems beyond today. |
