NATIVE AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES

A study of dynamics of American life as found in contemporary literature about and by Native American people. Included will be discussion of Native American history, relations with Euro-Americans, and contemporary situations and their implications. Candidates will read resource bibliography, participate in class discussion, and design individual research projects.

LAKOTA SOCIAL SYSTEMS

A background study of Lakota (Sioux) social systems from pre-contact time to the present. The impact of European institutions and the Lakota response to non-Indian structures have shaped contemporary Lakota society.

PLAINS INDIAN RELIGION

A sympathetic exploration of the life and religion of Plains Indian people, especially the western Sioux, in their cultural and historical setting. From Native American perspectives we will examine this religion both in its classical expression and in its response to European culture
