Participation
Journalism 095 is a participation course. If you enroll in this
course, you will be working for the yearbook, the newspaper or the news
department of KAUR radio. Editors for the two publications and the
radio station are instrumental in establishing and monitoring performance
requirements.
Each student will learn how a newspaper, yearbook, or radio news program
is produced. Individually, each will strive to become the best reporter/writer/designer/editor
possible. At all times, journalists must serve the truth, as instructed
and advised by the journalist's code of ethics.
Objectives:
-
All reporters/writers will become better at their craft. Through
editing suggestions and changers, the students will see avenues for improvement.
Of course, any student should be working to improve her/his work as a matter
of course.
-
Students working as reporters should become familiar with their beats and
should be aware of newsworthy material emerging from those areas.
-
Students working in design and layout will pursue a quality product, one
whose ideas are based on original creations and/or current trends in the
field.
-
Students will work collaboratively in the production of a quality product.
Expectations:
-
Students who are reporting/writing for the paper will complete a minimum
of eight stories. All stories must be in by established deadlines
times, and all stories must be of publishable quality. Stories must
be well written, factually accurate, fair and balanced, and thorough.
-
Those involved in typesetting, advertising sales, and ad production will
fulfill all responsibilities set forth by the editors.
-
Students working for the yearbook will work under the guidelines of one
of two plans:
-
Plan 1
-
Write eight stories for the yearbook.
-
Do two layouts for the yearbook.
-
Participate in meetings, meet deadlines, consult with editors.
-
Plan 2
-
Write four stories for the yearbook.
-
Do six layouts for the yearbook.
-
Participate in meetings, meet deadlines, consult with editors.
-
Students for both publications will attend all staff meetings and will
be prepared to accept deadlines.
-
Students who wish to complete participation credit with KAUR must receive
the consent of the participation instructor.
-
All participation students must submit the following to the participation
supervisor one week before midterm and again one week before final examinations
begin a detailed log of activities, clips of all newspaper stories or layouts,
copies of all yearbook stories or layouts, or tapes of radio newscasts.
Grading:
The editors or station managers and the participation supervisor will
together decide each individual's grade. All requirements must be
met in order for a student to receive an A; quality of work will also be
considered.
