* Professor Mullin named Kohlmeyer Professor

At Augustana's Commencement ceremony, the President awarded history's Dr. Michael Mullin the 2008-2009 Kohlmeyer Distinguished Teaching Professorship.

Dr. Frederick C. Kohlmeyer, through a gift to Augustana upon his death in 1990, established this distinguished professorship to recognize and to reward outstanding teaching. The recipient receives a summer stipend of $5,000 for each of the two years of the award. Dr. Mullin is the eight faculty member to receive the Kohlmeyer Distinguished Teaching Professorship. * History Majors Win Awards!

The History Department is please to announce that two senior history majors have recently received recognition:

Ryan Stobb won the award for best paper on regional history at April's 43rd annual Phi Alpha Theta Student History Conference held at the University of South Dakota. His paper was titled, "General Needed, No Experience Required: American Commanders of the 1862 Dakota Conflict."

Justin Simundson was selected as the 2008 Augustana Library Associates Research Award winner for his paper, "Above No-Man's Land: The Great War Experiences of a Royal Flying Corps Pilot."

* Dr. Johnson Awarded Harvard Fellowship

Dr. Jeff Johnson was awarded a National Endowment for the Humantities (NEH) award for this summer. He will serve as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University for four weeks and participate in an intistitute on the African American experience since the age of Jim Crow, hosted by the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research.

* Department to Host Annual Phi Alpha Theta Dinner

On Wednesday, November 7th at 6:00 p.m. the department will host its annual Phi Alpha Theta Dinner and Induction. This year's speaker is Dr. Burkholder, who will give a talk titled, "Sacred Sex and the Question of Religious Radicalism in Colonial Pennsylvania." The cost for dinner is $12.

* Visiting Lecturer Welcomed by the History Department

Dr. John W.W. Mann, of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, visited Augustana on Friday November 2nd. His talk, also sponsored by UBG Lectures, the Center for Western Studies, and the History Club, was titled "A Century in Exile: The Lemhi Shoshones and the Salmon River Country.” Professor Mann is an expert on American Indian history and sovereignty and spoke to over 60 attendees on the issues outlined in his book, Sacajawea's People: The Lemhi Shoshones and the Salmon River Country (University of Nebraska Press).

* Dr. Johnson Awarded Bradley Fellowship

Dr. Jeff Johnson was awarded the 2007 James H. Bradley Fellowship at the Montana Historical Society in Helena, Montana. The nationally-competitive award, granted since 1983, carries an honararium and the Bradley Fellow is expected to be the scholar in residence for at least one month. His research will examine William P. Scallon (1855-1951), a famed Helena attorney and Anaconda Copper Mining Company president. Congrats!

* History Major Wins Gilder Lehrman Fellowship

Congratulations to Liz Almlie, a junior history major, who has just been chosen as one of fifteen students to receive the Gilder Lehrman History Scholar award. This 5 week program which runs from June 24-July 28 includes a stipend and room and board in New York City; she will be living on Columbia University's campus. The students will meet with eminent historians, take trips to regional archives and complete a research project that focuses on early African American abolitionists. Well done Liz!

* Professor Preston Awarded Fellowship at Oxford

Dr. Peg Preston has been selelcted as the Augustana Summer Research Fellow to study at Harris-Manchester College which is one of the Oxford University colleges this June. Dr. Preston will be researching issues related to the role of sectarianism in 19th Century Ireland, with specific emphasis on Dublin. Congratulations!

* Adamson Recognized Nationally for Academics

Augustana women’s basketball standout, and senior history major, Alison Adamson has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII First team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is the second straight year the Vikings’ point guard has been selected to the first team.

Adamson is a senior from Willmar, Minn., and maintains a 3.99 grade point average.

This season she has started every game and leads the team in scoring with 15.2 points a game, steals with 66, 3-pointers with 57, and shares the lead in assists with 83. She now moves to the national ballot, where she will be considered for Academic All-America recognition.

* Six Students Initiated in Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society

Six Augustana students were initiated in the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society Tuesday night.

Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of learning and ideas among historians. The society seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by its members in a variety of ways.

The Augustana students are Alison Adamson (Willmar, MN), Kelly Goertzen (Woodbury, MN), Ginger Nelson (Saint Michael, MN), Laura Sova (Sioux Falls), Ryan Stobb (Tracy, MN), and Robyn Walth (Brandon, SD).

Dr. Margaret Preston, assistant professor of history at Augustana, is the student advisor.

* History Major Recipient of the 2006 Augustana Library Associates Research Award

Amanda Larson, a senior from Brandon, S.D., is the recipient of the first Augustana Library Associates Research Award for her paper “Spain and the Holocaust."

Majoring in history, Spanish and international studies, Amanda is the daughter of Dan and Deanna Larson. Upon graduation in May 2006, she plans to pursue either a law degree or a master’s degree in the field of international relations.

The Augustana Library Associates Research Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in research methodology and writing. Participants of the Augustana Symposium were eligible to submit their work for consideration.

The Augustana Library Associates was established in 1983 to promote and support the Mikkelsen Library and, in doing so, academic excellence at Augustana College.

* History Club Sponsors Speaker:

Dr. Mathias Bergmann, of the Department of History at Randolph-Macon College (Ashland, VA) spoke to the campus on Thursday, October 5th on the topic: "Jamestown's Antecedents: Early Jamestown in the Wider Atlantic World." Around 75 were in attendence.
