Description

An introduction to African-American and Native American studies designed to acquaint the student with the past and present conditions of racial, ethnic, and other minority peoples of the United States. The emphasis will be on broadening one's understanding of what it means to be among Americans of different cultural backgrounds. The credits may be applied to area 1.2. The unifying theme of this course is the Circle of Courage.

Goals

Belonging - Mastery - Independence - Generosity

  1. Self-understanding of one's own and other culturesin the past and present.
  2. Familiarity with the history and culture of African Americans.
  3. Understanding of the history and culture of Native Americans.
  4. Assessment of race relations in the present and future.
  5. Exploration and analysis of one's response to minorities in America.
  6. Consideration of the ethics of the self relating to the culturally different.

Requirements

  1. Completion of all reading assignments and ability to discuss the author's ideas and their implications.
  2. Incorporation of lecture concepts with reading and self-analysis as evident in the integrative essays.
  3. Regular attendance, class participation, and appropriate class deportment enhance essay scores.
  4. Work is due as listed on calendar. Late work does not earn full credit.
  5. Completing all assignments will earn a letter grade of "C". Articulate writing, class participation, depth of understanding, and precision of conceptualization earn higher grades.
