WHAT IS A PARISH NURSE?
A parish nurse is a registered nurse who facilitates the wholistic health of a congregation, thus reclaiming the healing ministry of the church. The parish nurse focuses on the spiritual, emotional, and physical dimensions of persons as they strive to achieve wellness and to manage their illness. The parish nurse functions as a health educator, a health counselor, a referral agent, an advocate, and an integrator of spirituality and health.

PURPOSE OF THE PARISH NURSING CENTER
1. To prepare registered nurses to meet the wholistic health needs within a congregation.
2. To assist interested churches in initiating parish nursing services.

PARISH NURSE PREPARATION PROGRAM CONTENT
The parish nurse preparation program content includes:
* Introduction to parish nursing
* Theology and healing
* Various aspects of the parish nurse role
* Spiritual caregiving
* Wellness and prevention
* Working with volunteers
* Assessment of family and congregation
* Legal and ethical aspects
* Management of parish nursing practice
* Use of nursing theory in practice

The Parish Nurse Preparation Course is based on the standardized core curricula developed through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center.

CONTACT INFORMATION
The Parish Nurse preparation program is offered each summer, usually in June. The prepraration program is co-sponsored with Avera Parish Nurse Center. For more information or to request a registration brochure, please contact the Department of Nursing at Augustana College.

ASSISTANCE TO CHURCHES
The Parish Nursing Center is available to provide information about parish nursing, consultation, and assistance in initiating parish nursing and in assessing congregational needs. For more information, please contact Dr. Mary Auterman at 605-274-4929.
