Chemical Physics Major

A major in Chemical Physics was approved in Spring 2002, after the printing of the current College Catalog. This major provides students with training at the boundary between chemistry and physics. All students in this major must complete the Chemical Physics Core and either the Chemistry Emphasis or the Physics Emphasis set of courses. The Chemical Physics major with a Chemistry Emphasis consists of a total of 55-60 credit hours. The Chemical Physics major with a Physics Emphasis consists of a total of 57-61 credit hours. Students may NOT receive both a Chemical Physics major and a Chemistry or Physics major. Students satisfying both sets of requirements will be allowed to choose which major they would like to appear on their official transcript.

Chemical Physics Core Courses
Chemistry 120: Introduction to Chemistry*
Chemistry 201: Organic Chemistry I
Chemistry 242: Analysis
Chemistry 301: Physical Chemistry I
Chemistry 302: Physical Chemistry II
Physics 221: General Physics I
Physics 222: General Physics II
Physics 361: Electromagnetic Theory I
Math 251: Calculus I
Math 252: Calculus II
Math 311: Differential Equations

Chemistry Emphasis Courses
ONE of the following Physics courses:
     Physics 321: Computational Physics
Physics 331: Electronics for Science and Engineering
     Physics 371: Modern Physics I
ALL of the following Chemistry courses:
     Chemistry 202: Organic Chemistry II
     Chemistry 311: Advanced Analytical Chemistry
     Chemistry 381: Quantum Chemistry
Research
2 credit hours of 399 (Independent Study Research) to be completed in Chemistry or split between Chemistry and Physics. With prior Chemistry Department approval, 1 credit hour of research may be completed in an approved off-campus program (usually during the summer).

Physics Emphasis Courses
ONE of the following Chemistry courses:
     Chemistry 311: Advanced Analytical
     Chemistry 341: Advanced Inorganic
     Chemistry 381: Quantum Chemistry
ALL of the following Physics courses:
     Physics 321: Computational Physics
Physics 331: Electronics for Science and Engineering
     Physics 371: Modern Physics I
     Physics 372: Modern Physics II**
Research
2 credit hours of 399 (Independent Study Research) to be completed in Physics or split between Chemistry and Physics. With prior Physics Department approval, 1 or 2 credit hours of research may be completed in an approved off-campus program (usually during the summer).

*Chemistry 201 has a prerequisite of Chemistry 120 or permission of the department. A student with 1.5 years of high school chemistry with B grades or better is advised to begin with Chemistry 201. With less background, a student normally begins with Chemistry 120.

**Subject to approval by the Physics Department, 397 (Special Topics) in Optics or Quantum Mechanics may be substituted for Physics 372.
