Lueking Named First Alternate for Rossing Scholarship
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Amy Lueking, a senior at Augustana College, is the recipient of a Rossing Physics Scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Lueking is one of five students attending liberal arts colleges affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America selected to receive the scholarship, established by Dr. Thomas D. Rossing, professor emeritus at Northern Illinois University.
Managed by the ELCA Foundation, distributions from The Rossing Fund for Physics Education Endowment are used to provide scholarships to students in physics.
Selected as a first alternate, Lueking receives $5,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year. A Dean's List student, she is the daughter of Shelly and Kent Nelson of Sioux Falls and is majoring in physics.
“It is a great pleasure to encourage the second group of Rossing scholars and alternates, a very talented group of young men and women who share my enthusiasm for physics as well as for the liberal arts tradition,” said Dr. Rossing.
One of the members of the selection committee, professor emeritus Richard Ylvisaker from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, commented that "This year's top candidates - the best of a stellar cohort - are notable both for their exceptional scientific talent and for the depth of their vocational commitment".
Lueking carries a 3.97 grade point average and is a physics tutor and laboratory assistant. She is also a member of the Viking soccer team and was named to the North Central Conference Academic All-Conference team this past season.
