Thinking of studying physics or engineering? Augustana College offers strong programs in both fields. Our students tend to follow one of three tracks: (1) Preparation for graduate study in physics or a related science. (2) Engineering. (3) Undergraduate physics as a platform for a non-science career or professional school, such as medicine, teaching, law, finance, acoustics, or science journalism to name a few.

Physics: We provide all of the courses necessary for a rigorous preparation for graduate school in physics or a related field. Research and independent study experiences are encouraged, offering students the chance to explore beyond textbooks. Our upper level instructional labs focus on modern experiments and techniques that are frequently used in research laboratories. Recent research in the department has focused on atomic, molecular, and optical physics or particle physics. Students interested in graduate study in physics should consider the honors physics track.

In recent years our physics graduates have been left Augustana for a number of presigious graduate institutions, including the University of Virginia, Rice University, Kansas State University, and the University of Minnesota.

Engineering: We offer a 3-2 engineering dual degree programs with the University of Minnesota, Washington University in St. Louis, and Columbia University in New York. All three schools are ranked in U.S. News and World Report's top 50 engineering schools nationally. Augustana students are guaranteed admission if they complete the course requirements and are recommended by the Physics faculty for admission. No Augustana dual-degree student has ever failed to complete their engineering degree. Many students report that the liberal arts background they obtained at Augustana gives them an advantage as they leave school and enter the engineering workforce.

Course of Study: The department offers three majors: Physics, Engineering Physics, and the interdisciplinary major Chemical Physics. Details are available on the Program Information page.

Undergraduate education is our business at Augustana, and students will benefit from small class size and individual attention from a competent, caring faculty both in and out of the classroom.

Our alumni have been successful in a wide range of fields, as illustrated by this list.
