V.R. Nelson Honored
Chamberlain, SD -- Longtime Augustana College professor V.R. Nelson will be inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in September 2008. Professor Nelson served Augustana College from 1946-1992. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the "Education" category.
Dr. Nelson received his B.A. from Augustana in 1944 and followed that with a masters degree from the University of Colorado in 1946 and a D.Sci.Ed from the same institution in 1953. He taught physics and aviation at Augustana. As a certified CAA ground school instructor under a contract with the
US Air Force, he was responsible for teaching aerial navigation, civil
air regulations, theory of flight, and meteorology to persons in
careers such as air charter, air military, air cargo, air traffic
control, and aviation weather. He taught a wide range of physics courses and served as department chair.
An active applied scientist, Dr. Nelson designed and built the first defibrillator used at McKennan and Sioux Valley Hospitals. Along with students, he engineered many of the mechanical systems for the recently demolished Zip Feed Mill.
The Hall of Fame citation reads, "He has contributed greatly to improving the quality of life in our
region through the application of science teaching at Augustana College."
